TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis squad lost a close 5-4 match against South Florida Saturday afternoon (April 3) at the South Florida Tennis Complex. The loss dropped Michigan to 4-10 overall on the season, while South Florida improved to 12-6 overall.
The Wolverines performed well in doubles and nearly swept the three matches, instead winning two of the three contests. In another move to bolster the team's play, head coach Bitsy Ritt split her No. 1 doubles team of junior co-captains Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) and Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS), and each picked up a win with another partner.
Hart and freshman Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) posted an 8-2 victory at the top doubles spot, defeating Tina Harrison and Kathrine Tessier. Lund and senior Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) teamed to gain a 9-7 win at the No. 2 spot. In the final doubles match at the No. 3 slot, sophomores Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) and Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) lost a close 9-7 match to Natalie Schwartz and Ildiko Zubor.
South Florida would win the close 5-4 match with victories in four of the six singles matches. Michigan's two singles victories came as Hart and Boylan won at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots, respectively. Hart defeated Genevieve Houle in straight sets (6-1, 6-3), while Boylan won in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) over Marie-Eve Girard.
Michigan completes its non-conference slate at North Carolina on Monday, April 5 (5 p.m.). The match between the Wolverines and Tar Heels will be played at the Cone-Kenfeld Tennis Center.
