ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- On a cold day at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, the Wolverines scored early and five U-M hurlers made a pair of runs hold up as the University of Michigan baseball team shut out Michigan State 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon (March 18) in a non-conference midweek contest.
Michigan (10-9) scored a run each in the second and fourth innings and held off a late comeback attempt from Michigan State (5-14).
The Wolverines got on the early with a hit by pitch to start the second inning. Evan Haeger doubled, and Greg Pace Jr. singled to load the bases before Matthew Ossenfort scored on a double play to put the Wolverines up 1-0. Michigan's second run came courtesy of Haeger in the fourth. He reached on a walk, stole second, moved to third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch.
The Spartans loaded the bases in the seventh with two outs, but Gavin DeVooght came on and forced a groundout on his third pitch to keep MSU off the board. Michigan State put a pair of runners on in the eighth and ninth, but DeVooght quelled the comeback attempts to earn a seven-out save, his sixth of the season.
U-M pitchers scattered eight hits in the shutout, beginning with Cade Montgomery, who allowed just three hits over three innings while striking out four. Grant Bradley (1-0) picked up the win with 3.2 scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits and fanning two. Shane Brinham and Max Debiec came on in the seventh before DeVooght pitched the final 2.1 innings with two strikeouts.
U-M tallied six hits on the day, with Pace going 2-for-3, while Brayden Jefferis, Colby Turner and Haeger each doubled for their only hits of the day.
Michigan will begin its first home series of the season, starting on Friday (March 20) at 4 p.m., when they host Nebraska at Ray Fisher Stadium. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
