ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a back-and-forth contest, the University of Michigan baseball team fell in the final game of the series, 9-5, to Nebraska on Sunday morning (March 22) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Over the first five innings, both offenses were quiet as Michigan (11-11, 1-5 Big Ten) led 1-0 after two singles in the second inning. In the final four innings, the teams combined for 13 runs.
Nebraska (18-6, 5-1 Big Ten) tied the game with a solo home run to open the sixth, but the Wolverines answered in the bottom half of the inning as Cade Ladehoff opened with a single. After a walk and a single from Greg Pace Jr. loaded the bases, Noah Miller brought home Ladehoff with a hit by pitch. A fielder's choice got the out at home, but Brayden Jefferis brought home Pace on another hit by pitch. A strikeout ended the inning and left the bases loaded.
The Cornhuskers responded with another leadoff home run and used three singles and two walks to take a 4-3 lead. Michigan answered with an inning-opening home run from Brenden Stressler to tie the game at four, but the next three batters were retired in order. Both teams sent just three batters to the plate in the eighth before Nebraska took the lead back in the ninth with five runs on three hits.
Michigan rallied in the ninth as Jefferis opened with a single, while Colby Turner reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on an error. Stressler drew a walk, and Ladehoff tallied his second hit of the day as Turner scored from second. However, the Wolverines could not plate any more runs as a strikeout and groundout ended the game.
Tate Carey and Cade Montgomery pitched the first 5.1 innings for the Wolverines and held Nebraska to just three hits and one run while recording two strikeouts.
U-M's offense was led by two-hit days from Jefferis and Ladehoff, while Stressler and Turner tallied extra-base hits. Jefferis recorded two RBIs in the contest, while five different players scored the Wolverines' runs.
