KENT, Ohio -- The University of Michigan baseball team came up short against Kent State on Tuesday afternoon, falling 5-3 at Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium.
Kent State opened the scoring on a two-run homer off starter David Lally Jr. (2-4) in the second inning. Michigan (32-18) had baserunners in each of the first three innings, but did not get on the scoreboard until the fourth inning.
Brayden Jefferis opened with a single before a hit by pitch and from Matthew Ossenfort and Brenden Stressler, respectively, loaded the bases. With one out, Jefferis scored on a wild pitch, and an Elie Kligman hit by pitch reloaded the bases. Drew Culbertson followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2. An error put Cooper Mullens again loaded the bases, but a strikeout left all three runners stranded.
Kent State (37-12) regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth, 3-2. The Golden Flashes extended their lead in the sixth on another home run, this time a solo shot off Max Debiec -- his only hit allowed over 2.1 innings of relief work.
U-M chipped away at the lead, getting a run back in the seventh. Mullens singled with one out and Turner drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. Evan Haeger doubled to center field, scoring Mullens, but a popout and flyout ended the inning.
Erik Puodziunas took over in the seventh and retired all six batters he faced while striking out three, to give Michigan a final chance in the ninth.. A two-out Turner single to left-center brought the tying run to the plate, but a strikeout ended the game.
The Wolverines will close out the regular season hosting a three-game series against Ohio State, beginning Thursday (May 14) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The game is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch, and the contest will be streamed live on B1G+.
