SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- University of Michigan women's tennis player Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) finished as the runner-up at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships held this weekend at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
Lund lost to Marquette's Ana Fernandez in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) for the tournament's singles title. It was Lund's second consecutive finals appearance and first loss in eight matches (she won the Wolverine Fall Invitational "Blue Flight" singles tournament Oct. 16-18). Lund posted a 5-1 record at the regional tournament with upsets over fourth-seeded Jennifer Hall of Notre Dame (2-6, 7-6, 7-6) and Simona Petrutiu of Southern Illinois (0-6, 6-3, 6-3).
In doubles action, senior Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) and freshman Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) posted a 1-2 record. They lost their first-round match to top-seeded Ana Fernandez and Elisa Penalvo (6-3, 6-0) but rebounded with a consolation first-round victory before losing to Southern Illinois' Pamela Floro and Simona Petrutiu in consolation quarterfinals (8-1).
