Justin Tress

Justin Tress was named Michigan Football's Director of Strength and Conditioning on January 29, 2024, following six years on staff, including the 2023 season as associate director. He is in his eighth season on staff in 2025.

Tress joined the Michigan staff prior to the 2018 season. He came to Ann Arbor following one year (2017) at Arkansas, where he began working under Ben Herbert as an assistant. Before working with the Razorbacks, Tress spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons at Alabama, helping the Tide reach the 2016 and 2017 National Championship Games.

From the time Tress joined the U-M staff, the Wolverines have had 29Â players selected in the NFL Draft, including nine first-round selections in Devin Bush, Rashan Gary, Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant, Dax Hill, Aidan Hutchinson, Colston Loveland, Kwity Paye, and Mazi Smith.

At Michigan, Tress has worked with three top-10 Heisman Trophy finishers (Aidan Hutchinson, Blake Corum, J.J. McCarthy) and three athletes who have combined to win six national awards: two Lott IMPACT Trophy winners, and winners of the Outland Trophy, the Rotary Lombardi Award, the Rimington Award, and the Lou Groza Award.

Tress has helped U-M players total 32 first-team All-Big Ten accolades, and 20 have been named first- and second-team All-Americans (Corum, Jake Moody twice). He has been a part of three Big Ten Championship-winning teams and the 2023 National Championship team.

An alumnus of Kent State University where he played defensive back, Tress earned his exercise science degree from KSU in 2015.

A native of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, Tress attended Blackhawk High School, where he was voted captain by his teammates and earned all-conference honors. He earned three varsity letters in football and two in track and field.
