ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With four birdies anchoring her opening round, senior Lauren Sung opened the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional with an even-par 71 to sit tied for 15th after Monday's (May 11) first round at the U-M Golf Course.
Starting on the 10th tee in her first NCAA individual appearance, Sung ran into early trouble with a double bogey on the par-3 12th hole. She answered immediately, bouncing back with consecutive birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 to return to even. After four straight pars, she made the turn still at even par.
Sung moved into red figures for the first time with a birdie on the par-5 third hole, then added another on No. 4 to reach 2-under with five holes to play. However, the U-M Golf Course got two strokes back as she bogeyed Nos. 7 and 9, closing her opening round at even-par 71 and tied for 15th overall.
Sung will continue regional play Tuesday (May 12), teeing off No. 1 at 9:50 a.m. alongside Alexis Vakasiuola of Grand Canyon and Isabella McCauley of Minnesota.
The Big Ten flexed its depth during the opening round as Northwestern and Ohio State share the team lead at 279 (-5), while USC sits third at 282 (-2) -- the only three teams under par after 18 holes. Duke (286) and UCF (287) round out the top five. Individually, Northwestern's Ashley Yun and USC's Elise Lee pace the field after each carded 66 (-5).
The top five teams from each regional site, along with the top two individuals not on advancing teams, will earn spots in the NCAA Finals, scheduled for May 22-27 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
