As tennis coach at Michigan from 1949 to 1970, Bill Murphy established himself as one of the nation's finest tennis instructors. Under his direction, the Wolverines captured 11 Big Ten championships and the NCAA title in 1957. His Michigan squads took 198 dual matches against only 45 defeats. Over the years, Murphy can be credited not only with his outstanding record but with what he has done through individual instruction. His coaching clinics have been extremely popular throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada. In 1973, Murphy was the recipient of the National Tennis Education Foundation Award for "Outstanding Contributions to Tennis Teaching Methods."Â
