WOLVERINES TRAVEL TO PSU AND OSU FOR REMATCHES
The 10th-ranked Michigan field hockey team will travel to State College, Pa., Friday (Oct. 23) to face the seventh-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. The Wolverines will be looking for redemption as Penn State is responsible for the only blemish on Michigan's Big Ten record. In the first meeting (Oct. 11), the Lions defeated Michigan 4-2 at Ocker Field. Sunday (Oct. 18) the Lions lost 4-2 to Iowa, dropping them to 5-2 in the Big Ten. The Maize and Blue is now the sole occupant of first place in the conference standings at 5-1. Ohio State is in third with a record of 4-2.
Sunday (Oct. 25), Ohio State will be looking for revenge as it hosts the Wolverines in another crucial rematch in Columbus, Ohio. In the first meeting (Oct. 9), the Maize and Blue downed the eighth-ranked Buckeyes 1-0 on Kelli Gannon's (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) second-half goal. OSU's only other conference loss came at Michigan State (Oct. 11) 2-0. If Michigan beats Ohio State, it will be the first time in series history the Wolverines have beaten the Scarlet and Grey in four consecutive matches. U-M and OSU are tied 17-17-2 in the all-time series.
U-M DOWNS MICHIGAN STATE WITH LAST-MINUTE GOAL
The Michigan field hockey team traveled to East Lansing, Mich., Sunday (Oct. 18) in search of a regular-season sweep of Michigan State. Once again, the Wolverines and Spartans played a tight game. The first half was scoreless, but the Spartans got on the board first nearly 10 minutes into the second half. Michigan's first goal came when senior captain Amy Philbrook (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead HS) found the back of the goal with 13:31 to play. The game remained tied until sophomore Tamra Geryk (Hatfield, Mass./Williston Northampton HS) beat MSU goaltender Amy Ortwein with just 0:26 left in the game.
"Tamra has been great for us all year," said head coach Marcia Pankratz. "She always seems to produce when we call her number. For a while, it looked like we were headed for another overtime (U-M defeated MSU 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 24), but I'm certainly happy it didn't come down to that."
DEFENSE CONTINUES GREAT PLAY
The Michigan defense has been outstanding all season. That play continued against Michigan State as the Wolverines allowed just five shots in the contest. The Spartans were unable to record a single shot after scoring their only goal, with 25:17 remaining. Michigan leads the Big Ten with six shutouts on the season.
PHILBROOK RETURNS, SCORES GOAL
Senior captain Amy Philbrook returned to the Michigan lineup Sunday (Oct. 18). Philbrook was sidelined for two games after injuring her knee in the Northwestern game (Oct. 4). She did not start, but her return proved to be significant as she scored the equalizing goal with 13:31 remaining in the game. She is expected to start vs. Penn State (Oct. 23).
