ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Playing in front of the largest crowd in U-M Soccer Field history (1,092), the University of Michigan women's soccer team played even with the nation's fifth-ranked team, Notre Dame, for 112 minutes and 58 seconds but came up short in the upset bid, falling 1-0 in double overtime.
Jenny Heft of the Fighting Irish scored seven minutes into the second overtime period on an assist from Jenny Streiffer to clinch the win for Notre Dame.
The Wolverines had a chance to end the game in regulation when Stephanie McArdle (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet HS) headed a corner kick from Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) off the crossbar.
Michigan goalkeeper Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) kept the Wolverines in the game making seven saves on the match.
Michigan returns to action Friday, Oct. 30, as the Wolverines play host to No. 13 Brigham Young at 4 p.m. at U-M Soccer Field.
