IOWA, NORTHWESTERN NEXT
The Big Ten season is underway and Michigan welcomes the challenge of taking its act on the road. The Wolverines head to Iowa City, Iowa, Friday (Oct. 2) to face the Iowa Hawkeyes at 4 p.m. CDT. Iowa has struggled thus far to a 4-5 overall record (0-2 in the Big Ten). Hawkeye conference losses have come to Penn State by a score of 6-1 and Ohio State 1-0. The Wolverines are looking for their third straight and third ever victory against the Hawkeyes. In 1997, the Maize and Blue swept the season series with the Hawkeyes, winning each game by one goal (2-1 and 3-2), snapping Iowa's 31-game winning streak in the series.
The second game of the weekend pits the Wolverines against the Wildcats of Northwestern Sunday (Oct. 4) at noon CDT. Similar to Iowa, the Wildcats have a decisive advantage in the series (28-4) but were swept by Michigan in 1997. Northwestern (4-6), previously ranked 18th, is also coming off a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Penn State.
"These are very critical games for us," said U-M head coach Marcia Pankratz. "We have to bring our best games. Against Michigan State, we were fortunate in that we did not play particularly well, but we came away with a victory. We have to be ready to play in every game or we can get beat."
WOLVERINES RANKED NINTH
The Michigan field hockey team is ranked ninth in the nation according latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. It is the third straight week the Wolverines have been ranked in the top ten and the first time in history the Wolverines have been in the top ten three consecutive weeks.
WOLVERINES NEED OT TO FINISH OFF SPARTANS
The Big Ten season got under way Thursday, Sept. 24, with the Wolverines playing host to the Michigan State Spartans. Michigan struck first with Loveita Wilkinson's (New Castle, Del./William Penn HS) fourth goal of the season just 2:25 into the game. The Maize and Blue dominated the game with the exception of the score, but the Spartans were able to force overtime. Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) ended the game with her fifth goal of the season just 4:01 into the extra period.
"We did not play our best game today," said Pankratz. "We had 16 (penalty) corners and we should have scored on more of them. We scored on enough though. The Big Ten is an extremely tough conference and we have to play well every game."
CARDINALS FALL 6-1
The Wolverines upped their record to 8-2 by beating the Louisville Cardinals 6-1 Sunday, Sept. 27, at Ocker Field. Tamra Geryk (Hatfield, Mass./Williston Northampton HS) netted four goals while Ashley Thomas (West Chester, Pa./Unionville HS) and Loveita Wilkinson each scored once.
"It was a good game for us to work on things that needed some improvement," said Pankratz. "It was great for our young players because each of them got in the game. Louisville is a very young team with a great coaching staff. They are definitely an up-and coming-program."
GERYK MAKES HISTORY
Sophomore Tamra Geryk set a school record with four goals in Michigan's 6-1 victory over Louisville Sunday, Sept. 27. With her performance, Geryk became the first Wolverine ever to net four goals in a regular season game. Julie Flachs recorded five hat tricks last season alone and several other individuals have netted three in a contest, but never has anyone scored four. The game was the second multiple-goal game of the year for Geryk as she notched three goals in U-M's 11-0 downing of Central Michigan (Sept. 11).
