HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- University of Michigan pitcher Luke Bonner (Taylor, Mich./Divine Child HS) turned out to be the perfect remedy for a losing streak. The senior righthander threw a complete-game five-hitter as the Wolverine baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-0 shutout of C.W. Post on Friday (March 12).
In the longest outing of his college career, Bonner (2-1) struck out a career-best 11 batters and allowed five walks in logging U-M's first shutout of the season. It also marked the first nine-inning complete-game shutout by a Wolverine in over two years, since March 7, 1997, when Brian Steinbach blanked Maine 12-0. Bonner's performance overshadowed a solid effort by C.W. Post pitcher Jeff Cohen (0-2), who allowed seven hits while going the distance for the Pioneers (2-5).
Michigan (4-5) got the only run Bonner would need in the second inning, when Rob Bobeda's (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) two-out triple down the left-field line scored Mike Cervenak (New Boston, Mich./Divine Child HS), who had singled to lead off the inning.
The Wolverines added another run the following inning. Scott Tousa (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands HS) and Brian Bush (Warren, Ohio/Howland HS) rapped back-to-back singles and moved up a base on an error by the left fielder. Tousa then scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Scales (Roswell, Ga./Milton HS).
In the fifth inning, Michigan added another insurance run as Tousa, who was 2-for-3 on the day, doubled down the right-field line and came around to score on a single by Scales, who extended his season-long hitting streak to nine games, matching his one-season career high. Over the past two seasons, Scales has hit safely in his last 13 games.
Michigan's three-game Florida trip continues with a 7 p.m. game Saturday (March 13) against Connecticut.
