IOWA CITY, Iowa -- After a 7-1 loss in the first game of a doubleheader at Iowa, the University of Michigan baseball team pounded out three home runs and 14 hits to win the second game 9-1 and earn a split Saturday (March 27) at Iowa Field. Both games were seven innings. The Wolverines (10-11, 2-1 Big Ten) own a 2-1 lead in the series heading into Sunday's (March 28) 1 p.m. finale.
In game two, senior first baseman Bryan Besco (Westland, Mich./John Glenn HS) smashed a pair of two-run homers and senior second baseman Bobby Scales (Roswell, Ga./Milton HS) went 4-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs and his second homer of the season to back the complete-game pitching of Bryce Ralston (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis HS). Ralston (3-1) hurled a four-hitter and allowed one unearned run while striking out three.
Jason Alcaraz (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado HS) added three hits, including two doubles, in four at bats and drove in three runs as the Wolverines jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one inning and scored three in the third, two in the fifth and three in the sixth for their fourth win in the last five games.
In the first game, Hawkeye pitcher Steve Rasmussen (4-1) allowed Michigan a single run in the first but settled down and held the Wolverines scoreless the rest of the way in his first complete game of 1999. J.J. Putz (0-2) took the loss for U-M, allowing four runs in three and a third innings.
Michigan managed just five hits, with Jay Dines (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) going 2-for-3 and Scales collecting U-M's lone extra-base hit (a double) and scoring the only Wolverine run.
