STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- In the battle of the unbeatens in the Big Ten Conference, the sixth-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team downed No. 5 Penn State 1-0 on Friday night (Oct. 20) at Bigler Field to secure at least a tie for the Big Ten regular-season crown. Freshman April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) scored the lone goal that solidified the Maize and Blue's second regular-season championship and the No. 1 seed -- and first-round bye -- in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament (Nov. 3-5) at Ocker Field.
The Wolverines broke up a tight game when Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) fed Fronzoni at 23:18 of the first period. The goal was Fronzoni's 14th of the season, which ties her for the team lead with Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS).
The Wolverine defense stifled the Nittany Lions, who were averaging four goals a game. Goalkeeper Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) made two key saves on the way to her third shutout of the season.
The Wolverines (15-3, 5-0 Big Ten) will honor their seniors when they return to Ocker Field to face Michigan State on Friday (Oct. 27) at 3 p.m. in their last regular-season contest. A victory over the Spartans will give the Wolverines their first outright regular-season title.
