Michigan vs. San Diego State
This will be the first-ever meeting between the Wolverines and Aztecs.
Month-Long Road Trip
The Michigan men's tennis team will spend the entire month of March competing away from Ann Arbor, traveling to California, Louisiana and Minnesota. In addition to the San Diego State match, the Wolverines will play in the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament in LaJolla, Calif. (March 2-5). Michigan will turn around and travel to Louisiana the following week for matches against Louisiana-Lafayette (Sunday, March 11) and Tulane (Monday, March 12). The Wolverines cap the month away by opening the Big Ten Conference dual match season at Minnesota (Saturday, March 19).
Freshmen Make Dual Match Debuts
A trio of Michigan freshmen made their career dual match debuts in the Wolverines' 7-0 victory against Eastern Michigan. Freshman Zach Held (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) and Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy-Fla.) won straight-set matches at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots, respectively. Held teamed with Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) to post an 8-1 victory over Eastern Michigan's Kory Gernhofer and Adam Williams at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Wright and McCain Ranked 36th in Doubles
Michigan's No. 1 doubles tandem of senior Matt Wright (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate HS) and sophomore Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) head into the San Diego State match ranked No. 36 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national doubles rankings. Wright and McCain have compiled a 4-1 dual match record at the top spot in the lineup and aar 7-4 overall this season. The tandem has a 21-14 career record together and is 15-9 in dual match action at the No. 1 spot.
Wright Climbing All-Time Career Singles Chart
Senior Matt Wright enters the San Diego State match eighth all-time at Michigan with 80 career singles victories (80-44 mark). Wright has a team-leading 16 wins this year (16-4) and is 4-0 at the No. 1 singles spot. He has an impressive 10-2 record against regional opponents, with his only setbacks coming to Iowa's Tyler Cleveland (ranked No. 24 nationally) and Northwestern's Brad Erickson. Wright has posted wins in nine of his last 10 matches and is pursuing his third career 20-win campaign.

Beam Nears 15 Wins
Sophomore Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) lists second on the team with 13 wins entering the San Diego State match. Beam has tallied a 13-5 overall singles record thus far and is a team-best 5-0 in dual match competition. He has compiled a 33-20 singles record during his first two seasons and is 20-12 against regional opponents. Beam has won his last five matches of the year and has an 8-1 record since the beginning of the 21st century.
Long Chasing 75th Victory
Senior co-captain John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) enters the San Diego State match tied with Henry Beam for second on the team in singles victories. Long has a 13-6 overall record and is 3-1 in dual match competition at the No. 2 spot. He has a 72-32 career singles record and is an impressive 36-15 in dual match action during his career.
McCain and Cox Eye 10th Wins
Sophomores Danny McCain and Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) head in the San Diego State match looking to collect their 10th singles wins of the campaign.
McCain has a 9-5 overall record this year and is 4-1 in dual match action. He beat Eastern Michigan's Jason Yue in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) at the No. 1 singles spot, his first appearance at the top spot in the lineup. McCain has a 26-21 career singles record and is 15-10 in dual match competition during his career. He is 3-1 this season at the No. 3 spot in the lineup and has tallied a 6-2 record against regional opponents.
Last season's leader in victories, Cox has compiled a 9-6 record thus far. He has a 4-1 dual match record and is an impressive 23-3 in dual match action during his career. Cox gained his 35th career singles victory in the Eastern Michigan match, beating Kory Gernhofer at the No. 3 spot (6-3, 6-0). Cox has a 5-3 mark against regional opponents this year.
Michigan Ranked 27th
The Wolverines head west listed No. 27 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings released Feb. 23, 2000. Michigan is one of 16 teams in the ITA's top 75 that remain unbeaten heading into this week's matches. The Wolverines are one of three Big Ten Conference schools still undefeated on the year, joining No. 8 Illinois (4-0) and No. 32 Indiana (5-0).
Mees Off to Terrific Start
First-year head coach Mark Mees is off the second best start for a men's tennis coach at Michigan. Mees has won the first five matches of his career, second only to Bill Murphy's 18 straight wins to the start his coaching career (8-0 in 1949, 9-0 in 1950 and one victory to start the 1951 season).
