Michigan (15-20-1) won the opener 5-2 behind the combined five-hit pitching of Big Ten rotation pitchers junior LHP Nick Alexander (Alpena, Mich./Alpena HS), junior RHP Vince Pistilli (Highland, Ind./Highland HS) and sophomore RHP Bobby Korecky (Saline, Mich./Saline HS).
Pistilli (4-4) evened his record with the win, while Korecky, the Wolverine "closer" in 1999, notched his first save of the season (sixth career save). Alexander and Korecky each worked three one-hit, scoreless innings, while Pistilli allowed three hits and two runs (one earned) in the middle three innings.
Sophomore 1B/LHP Jeff Trzos (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) went 2-for-3 in the opener, and his two-out triple in the sixth inning snapped a 2-2 tie. Freshman 2B Jordan Cantalamessa (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS), who was also 2-for-3 in the opener, singled in Trzos moments later for a 4-2 lead.
The Wolverines closed out the first-game scoring as Bobeda singled to lead off the eighth inning, stole second and scored on a single by freshman DH Brock Koman (Pueblo, Colo./South HS).
Junior All-America candidate catcher David Parrish (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) had his hitting streak snapped at 18 games as he went 0-for-4 in the opener with his best bid for a hit coming on a first-inning drive to right.
Sophomore LHP Kirk Taylor (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) collected the win in the second game, working 4.1 innings and allowing nine hits and three runs. Taylor (1-0) was making his first start of the season and now has a 3.65 ERA.
Michigan used a seven-run fourth inning to take the lead and control of the nightcap. Siena Heights led 3-1 when Bobeda opened the fourth with a single to center and he scored on a long double by junior/sophomore RF C.J. Ghannam (Farmington, Mich./Harrison HS). Ghannam scored the tying run on the second single of the game by freshman catcher Alex Coleman (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highland HS). Bobeda closed the rally with a long, two-run triple, his second hit of the inning.
Taylor started the fifth inning, but loaded the bases with one out and freshman RHP Tim Leveque (Northridge, Calif./Crespi HS) closed out the fifth with a popup and a strikeout and worked a scoreless sixth inning. Trzos closed the game by himself in the top of the seventh with a pair of strikeouts and a pop to the pitcher.
Michigan plays Notre Dame in the annual "Baseball Bash" contest at Old Kent Park in Grand Rapids, Mich. The game benefits the scholarship drives for the Grand Rapids area alumni clubs of both schools. Freshman LHP Rich Hill (Milton, Mass./Milton HS), 1-2 with a 9.12 ERA, is the tentative starter for the Wolverine vs. Notre Dame.
