A native of Dallas, Texas, Foster will handle the pitching staff and help assistant coach Chris Harrison and Zahn with recruiting. He joins the Michigan baseball staff after serving as an area scouting supervisor for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
"Steve is an excellent baseball coach," said Zahn. "He has an outstanding background and I'm thrilled to have a coach with his experience as a college coach and as a player and a scout at the professional level join our staff.
"He has a heart for college coaching and our team will be better because he is here," added Zahn.
Foster, 34, earned his B.S. degree in physical education at Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1998. He attended Blinn Junior College (1985-86) and the University of Texas-Arlington (1986-88, 1995).
Foster served as an assistant baseball coach at Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1997 and 1998. The 1997 Pointers finished 31-13 and made the NCAA Division III College World Series for the first time.
The Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year at Texas-Arlington in 1988, Foster was drafted and signed by the Cincinnati Reds. He spent three seasons in the Major Leagues (1991-93) and was 3-3 with three saves before suffering a career-ending shoulder injury.
Former Wolverines that were teammates of Foster's in Cincinnati include SS Barry Larkin (who played at U-M 1983-86), 3B Chris Sabo (1981-83), 1B Hal Morris (1984-86) and LHP Ross Powell (1987-89).
Foster and his wife, the former Cori Cizek, have a son, Casey (4), and a daughter, Lauren (1).
