U-M Captains Take Charge in 4-1 Victory Over SMS

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The fourth-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team beat Southwest Missouri State 4-1 on Saturday (Sept. 30) in a neutral-site matchup at Iowa's Grant Field. Senior co-captain Regan Wulfsberg (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown HS) scored two goals for the second time in her career in leading the Maize and Blue to its 10th straight win.
The Wolverines' other co-captain, Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS), opened up the scoring for Michigan at 12:57 of the first half with a penalty-stroke goal. Gannon added two helpers, assisting on April Fronzoni's (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) goal at 25:30 of the second half and Wulfsberg's second goal, at 17:43.
The Maize and Blue, which has allowed two goals in the past five games, continued to play stifling defense. Defender Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, S. Australia/Westminister) made a defensive save and Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) stopped two shots on the afternoon.
The Wolverines (12-1, 3-0 Big Ten) will be back at Ocker Field on Friday (Oct. 6) at 4 p.m. to take on Big Ten foe Northwestern.
