Tournament Schedule and Scores
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's water polo team made its Ann Arbor debut Saturday (Feb. 17) on the first day of the Michigan Invitational. The Wolverines, ranked ninth in the latest Collegiate Water Polo Association poll, defeated the Michigan State and Miami (Ohio) club teams before falling to top-ranked Stanford. Michigan outscored its first two opponents 29-7 and won all but two of its sprints.
Sophomore Abbi Rowe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) scored the first women's varsity water polo goal at Canham Natatorium as the Wolverines defeated Michigan State 11-3 in the first match of the morning. After a scoreless first period for both teams, Michigan turned up the heat, finding the net six times in the second seven minutes of play.
The Wolverines added five more goals in the second half while holding Michigan State to only one goal per period. Senior Christy Lilley (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) led Michigan with three goals. Freshman Camille Clarendon (Redlands, Calif./Redlands HS) and junior Sara Kowel (Rockville, Mich./Rockville HS) split time in the net, providing excellent saves for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines were back in action one hour later, easily defeating Miami (Ohio) 18-4. Freshman Julie Nisbet (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) provided four Michigan goals, including three in the first period, and five Wolverines scored two goals each. Clarendon shared netminder duties with sophomore Emily Pelino (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS), holding Miami scoreless for the entire last period. Miami penalties proved costly for the RedHawks as Michigan scored six power-play goals during the game.
Michigan concluded its first-day action with a 17-3 loss to top-ranked Stanford. The Cardinal's trio of goaltenders haunted the Wolverines throughout the match, blocking numerous shots and goal chances, including a one-on-one penalty shot, in the 28 minutes of play. The Wolverines also fell victim to Stanford's offense, which outscored its two Saturday opponents 33-4.
Freshman Corrie Kenagy (Lake Forsest, Calif./El Toro HS) and junior Mandi Hagedorn (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) each found the net in the first period against Stanford, while junior Delia Sonda (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) scored in the final minute of play.
The Wolverines conclude the inaugural Michigan Invitational with two games tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 18) at Canham Natatorium. The Maize and Blue will have a rematch against Stanford at 11:45 a.m. before taking on Indiana at 2:15 p.m.
*Note: Michigan State and Miami (Ohio) are club teams and therefore the results of their games do not count toward Michigan's season win/loss record.
