LOS ANGELES -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team fell 9-4 to No. 12 Loyola Marymount on Thursday (Feb. 22) at the Aquatics Center in Burns Recreation Center. The Lions (2-0) used a five-goal flurry in the third period to drop the Wolverines to 4-4-1 on the season.
The Wolverines fell into a deficit early when LMU scored 34 seconds into the match. Michigan junior Delia Sonda (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and freshman Corrie Kenagy (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro HS) quickly answered, giving the Wolverines a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
After Loyola Marymount went up 3-2 after two periods, Michigan fell victim to the Lions' offense in the third period as LMU scored five goals in the seven minutes of play. Sonda and senior Melissa Karjala (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) each added goals to the Wolverines' tally to finish their scoring. Loyola Marymount slipped in one more goal in the fourth quarter to close out the game 9-4.
The Wolverines will travel to Santa Barbara, Calif., to compete in the California-Santa Barbara Gaucho Tournament on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 24-25). Michigan will face off against No. 3 Southern Cal in an 11:30 a.m. matchup and will play either No. 5 San Jose State or No. 10 California-San Diego in the second round of the bracketed tournament.
