ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's water polo team received hat tricks from freshmen Julie Nisbet (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) and Chelsea Kay (Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna Beach HS) to defeat Michigan State University's club team 9-2 in exhibition play Friday (March 16) at Canham Natatorium.
The Wolverines, who hold a 4-0 record over the Spartans in exhibitions this season, scored three goals in the first seven minutes. Nisbet scored her first of the night less than four minutes into the game, putting the Maize and Blue on the board. Once the Wolverines had the lead they never relinquished it, pounding the ball into the net eight times before allowing the Spartans to register a point.
Aside from Nisbet's and Kay's three-goal nights, the Wolverines also received scoring from juniors Delia Sonda (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and Maribeth Sitkowski (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep HS) and freshman Corrie Kenagy (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro HS).
The Wolverines (10-9-1) return to action next weekend when they host division foes Slippery Rock and Indiana in the Division Tournament. The two-day event will be held at Canham Natatorium. The first game between Michigan and Slippery Rock will commence at 3 p.m. on Saturday (March 24).
