Boston College Dumps Michigan in Series Opener

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Boston College junior RHP Paul Knapic worked seven innings to record his second win of the season as the Eagles topped the University of Michigan 8-2 in baseball action Saturday night (March 3) at Henley Field. Knapic (2-1) fanned six in his seven innings of work, allowing one run on five hits.
Michigan sophomore LHP Rich Hill (Milton, Mass./Milton HS) allowed six runs in four innings, with three in the third inning and three in the fifth. He faced three batters in the fifth and they all scored. Hill struck out four batters, including three straight to strand a runner at third in the second inning.
Junior RHP Bobby Wood (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) allowed two runs in his four innings out of the bullpen with four strikeouts, while junior LHP Kirk Taylor (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts.
Senior DH Joe Kealty paced the Boston College offense with four hits, including a pair of run-scoring singles, and junior 1B Brian Durkin hit a solo homer for the Eagles.
Sophomore LF Jordan Cantalamessa (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) knocked in both Wolverine runs with his team-leading fourth double in the fourth inning and a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.
Freshman RF Brandon Roberts (Arlington, Texas/Martin HS) was 2-for-3 vs. Boston College with a double and junior/sophomore 1B Mike Sokol (Sterling Heights, Mich./DeLaSalle HS) doubled and scored in the eighth inning.
Senior SS Bill LaRosa (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS), who finished the game in centerfield, collected a two-out infield single in the bottom of the ninth inning to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.
Michigan (3-5) closes out its nine-game Florida trip on Sunday (March 4) with a noon rematch against Boston College (2-5) at Tigertown's Ty Cobb Field in Lakeland. Freshman RHP Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS), 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and one save, is scheduled to make his first career start.

Bill LaRosa extended his hitting streak to 17 games, including the last 10 games of 2000 and the first seven games he has played in during 2001.
Sophomore 3B Brock Koman (Pueblo, Colo./South HS) had his seven-game hit streak snapped by Boston College.

Cantalamessa has reached base 11 times in his last 16 plate appearances (.688) and is 8-for-13 (.615 batting average) in that span over four games. He has all four of his doubles in those four contests.
