BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's water polo team swept the first day of competition at the Indiana Invitational on Saturday (March 31) at the Counsilman-Billingsly Aquatic Center on the campus of Indiana University. The 13th-ranked Wolverines defeated the No. 18 Massachusetts Minutewomen 10-8 before stopping the Michigan State club team 10-4.
Senior tri-captain Melisssa Karjala (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) helped the Wolverines defeat UMass by netting six of the 10 Michigan goals. The Wolverines got on the board first with a quick goal by sophomore Stephanie Morse (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS). Massachusetts answered and the two teams continued to battle to a 5-5 halftime score.
The Minutewomen took the lead after rebounding one of their own missed shots, but Michigan quickly answered and regained the lead. UMass tied it up once again, but the Wolverines refused to relinquish the game and scored three unanswered goals to put the game away. Karjala earned scored three goals in the final period, earning a hat trick in seven minutes of play.
Against in-state rival Michigan State, freshmen Julie Nisbet (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) and Stephanie Rupp (Hemet, Calif./Hemet HS) both scored double goals, along with junior Maribeth Sitkowski (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep HS). The Wolverines scored first and often, netting three goals in the first period while holding the Spartans scoreless. Michigan State found the net twice during the second period, but the Wolverines took a 5-2 lead into the half, thanks to a pool-length goal by Rupp with three-tenths of a second left.
The Wolverines dominated the second half, finding the net four times in the third period and not allowing the Spartans a chance. Goalkeeper Camille Clarendon (Redlands, Calif./Redlands HS) was once again trustworthy in goal, providing great coverage in front of the net. Catching a ball that was teetering along the goal line, Clarendon stopped a Spartan run. Senior tri-captain Torye Santucci (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing HS) scored the final goal of the game, giving the Wolverines the 10-4 victory.
Head coach Amber Drury-Pinto and her Wolverines will return to the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center on Sunday (April 1) to face division rival Indiana University at 1 p.m. CDT in Bloomington, Ind. Michigan holds a 2-0-1 record against the Hoosiers this season, recently defeating them twice only a week ago in Ann Arbor.
