BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The 13th-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team concluded the regular season and remained unbeaten against No. 17 Indiana University as it defeated the Hoosiers 8-6 in the closing game of the Indiana Invitational on Sunday (April 1) at IU's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
The Wolverines (16-9-1) were outscored 3-2 in the first period but stormed back, finding the net three times and keeping the Hoosiers scoreless for two straight periods. Both teams accounted for three goals in the final period, but the Wolverines finished with a two-goal advantage as time expired. Michigan now holds a 3-0-1 unbeaten record against Indiana during the 2001 season.
Senior tri-captain Christy Lilley (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and junior Sara Kowal (Rockville, Mich./Rockville HS) each found the net twice for the Maize and Blue. Michigan received its remaining scoring from a member of each class -- freshman Katherine Gregg (Newport, Calif./Newport Harbor HS), sophomore Stephanie Morse (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS), junior Mandi Hagedorn (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and senior Melissa Karjala (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS).
Freshman netminder Camille Clarendon (Redlands, Calif./Redlands HS) once again proved strong in goal, making six well-needed saves for the Maize and Blue. Clarendon made a diving save as the ball wavered at the edge of the goal line to halt a late-game Hoosier comeback.
The Wolverines begin the postseason championship run as they face division rivals at the Division Tournament in Grove City, Pa., on Saturday and Sunday (April 7-8). The top four teams from the Division Championship advance to the Eastern Championships on April 28-29 in Providence, R.I., where the winner will be given an exclusive berth to the 2001 NCAA Women's Water Polo Championships on May 12-13 in Palo Alto, Calif.

Senior tri-captain Melissa Karjala received the Offensive Player of the Invitational award. Aided by her school-record six-goal performance in the Massachusetts game (March 31), Karjala accounted for eight goals in the three games played, the most of any Indiana Invite participant.
This game marked the first time this season that the Wolverines and Hoosiers have played and not ended regulation in a tie. The first meeting (Feb. 18) ended in a 4-4 tie. The previous two meetings last weekend at the Southern Division Tournament, Michigan defeated the Hoosiers 6-5 (March 24) and 10-9 (March 25), both in overtime.
