This Week
The No. 9 University of Michigan women's soccer team (10-2, 5-1 Big Ten) begins a stretch that features three of its next four games on the road with two contests this weekend in the state of Indiana. The Wolverines will take on No. 20 Purdue Friday (Oct. 11) on West Field at the Varsity Soccer Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. EST/CDT start. Michigan then plays Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 13) at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. The contest is set to begin at 4 p.m. EST/CDT.
Scouting This Week's Opponents
Purdue -- The Boilermakers are off to their best start in the five-year history of the program at 7-2-1 and are tied for second place in the Big Ten Conference (3-1-1). Purdue won its third conference game last Friday against Northwestern (Oct. 4) with a 2-1 decision. Fifth-year senior Tari St. John led the way against the Wildcats with a goal and an assist. Junior forward Jenni Moppert leads Purdue in goals (4) and points (9), while junior forward Annette Kent (three goals, one assist) and senior midfielder Jessica Baumhoff (two goals, three assists) are second on the team with seven points apiece. Senior Jocelyn Cavalier has been strong in goal for Purdue, allowing only five of the Boilermakers' seven goals-against this season. Purdue on the Internet: www.purduesports.com.
Indiana -- At 2-1-2, the Hoosiers (6-3-2 overall) are tied for fifth place in the Big Ten. Indiana overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit and salvaged a tie against Northwestern (Oct. 6) with two second-half goals to remain in the conference chase. Last Friday (Oct. 4), IU earned a 1-0 victory in a non-conference contest against DePaul. The Hoosiers are led on offense by junior forward Shelly Grushka's four goals and 10 points. Freshman forward Kristen Zmijewski has made an immediate impact to the line up, with three goals and two helpers in 11 starts. Seven other players have scored at least one goal, balancing out the IU attack. The Hoosiers' goalkeeper, junior Shaunna Daugherty, has made 45 saves in net and boasts a 6-3-1 record. Last Week
Michigan earned home wins against No. 12 Penn State (Oct. 4) and Ohio State (Oct. 6) to improve to 5-1 in the Big Ten. The Wolverines handed the Nittany Lions a 4-0 loss, marking the first time Michigan has beaten PSU in a regular-season contest. Following a scoreless first half, Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS), Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South HS), Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) and Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) put away goals in the second frame. Goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) earned the 17th shutout of her career, becoming Michigan's all-time shutout leader.
The Wolverines scored the only goal of the game at 32:16 on a header from Kayal, her second game-winner of the weekend, to beat Ohio State on Sunday. In a tough, physical game, the teams combined for nearly 40 fouls and two cards. Grech weathered a late Buckeye comeback bid to earn her second shutout of the weekend.
Swept Away
Junior goalkeeper Suzie Grech and senior defender Andrea Kayal combined to sweep the Big Ten's Player of the Week awards on Oct. 7. Grech was named Defensive Player of the Week with two shutouts and a total of 11 saves for the Wolverines, while Kayal scored the game-winning goal in both contests. Grech becomes the first Wolverine to earn the Player of the Week award three time in her career. Kayal, honored for the first time in her career, is the ninth Wolverine to be honored in the nine-year history of the program.
Shutout Suzie
With her 17th career shutout Oct. 4 vs. Penn State, junior Suzie Grech became Michigan's career shutout leader. Grech, who has held opponents scoreless four times this season and 18 times in her career, overtook Carissa Stewart's (1997-2000) old record of 16 career shutouts.
Look Out, Dr. Jones!
With her shutout against Ohio State, Suzie Grech jumped into a tie for second place among Michigan's career win leaders. Grech joins Jessica Jones (1995-98) in the No. 2 spot with 26 wins apiece. Carissa Stewart (1997-2000) is the program's all-time leader with 41 career wins.
Kayal, the Queen of Clutch
Dating back to Oct. 1, 2000, all of Andrea Kayal's last six goals have been game-winners. Kayal has three game-winning goals this season, including two last weekend against Penn State and Ohio State.
Upon Further Review
Freshman defender Colleen McAndrews (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East HS) earned the first assist of her career on Abby Crumpton's goal against Penn State. The assist was originally credited to fellow freshman Stephanie Boyles (Arvada, Colo./Pomona HS), but proved to be McAndrews' after the Michigan coaching staff reviewed the game tape. McAndrews has started in all 12 of Michigan's games this season.
The Season So Far ...
Through 12 games, Abby Crumpton has tallied a team-leading 26 points (nine goals, eight assists). The 26 points tie her with Jessica Limauro (1995-98) for 10th on U-M's single-season points list. Limauro recorded 26 points in 1997 and also holds ninth place on the list with 27 points in 1998. Crumpton's eight assists is also rank among Michigan's season leaders, tying her 1999 total for fourth-best all-time.
Ground Control to Major Tom, Commencing Countdown, Engines On
With 107 career points, senior forward Abby Crumpton is within striking distance of becoming Michigan's all-time leader in points. Crumpton is only seven points away from Kacy Beitel's (1997-2000) record of 114 points. Amber Berendowsky (1996-99) sits between Beitel and Crumpton is second place with 113 points. Crumpton has 41 goals and 26 assists in her career.

Counting the Seconds
Abby Crumpton continues to climb higher among Michigan's career offensive leaders. Crumpton is currently second among Michigan's career goal scorers with 41 tallies. Her marker against Penn State propelled Crumpton out of a tie with Amber Berendowsky (1996-99) and into sole possession of second. Kacy Beitel (1997-2000) tops the list with 44 goals.
Third Watch
With eight assists this season, Abby Crumpton has moved up two spots among the program's career leaders into third place. Crumpton has 25 career assists and need one more helper to tie Kacy Beitel (1997-2000) for second place. Amber Berendowski (1996-99) occupies first place, collecting 33 assists in her career.
Hit Me With Your Best Shot
With four shots against Penn State and six shots on the weekend, Abby Crumpton leapt ahead of Kacy Beitel (1997-2000) to become Michigan's all-time shot leader. Crumpton currently has 260 career shots, five more than Beitel (255).

Some of the Best Helpers in the Big Ten
Abby Crumpton's eight assists so far this season are second in the Big Ten, just one behind Penn State's Christie Welsh. Senior defender Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) occupies the third spot with Wisconsin's Jenny Kundert at seven assists apiece. Therese Heaton and Erika Kleinholz (North Ridgeville, Ohio) are two of four players in the seventh place with four helpers.
One of the Best
Abby Crumpton sits atop most of the Big Ten's offensive categories. Crumpton leads the conference in points with 26, five ahead of second place. Crumpton is tied for the league lead with nine goals and is ranked second in assists (eight).
I Like Goooals
Through the first 12 games of the season, Michigan has scored more goals than any other Big Ten team. The Wolverines have scored 29 times this season and are averaging 2.42 goals per game. Penn State has the second-highest goal count with 26 markers in 11 contests. The Maize and Blue is also first in the Big Ten in assists (33) and points (91). The Wolverines are second in shots with 191.
Best to Ten
With a win over Ohio State, Oct. 6 became the earliest Michigan has reached the 10-win plateau in the nine-year history of the program. In 1997 Michigan was 10-2-1 on Oct. 10 after earning a 6-0 win over Wright State.

In the Polls
Michigan jumped from No. 13 to No. 9 in the Oct. 7 NSCAA/adidas Coaches' Poll, tying the highest the Wolverines have ever climbed in the nine-year history of the program. Starting Sept. 2, the Maize and Blue spent two weeks in the No. 9 spot. Michigan is also ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA Great Lakes Regional poll.

On the Horizon
The Wolverines push into the second half of their season with a non-conference matchup against Notre Dame next Thursday (Oct. 17) at the U-M Soccer Field. The weekday contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. Michigan then travels to the state of Illinois the following Sunday (Oct. 20) for a Big Ten test against Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. The game against the Wildcats is set for a 12:30 CDT start.
