DURHAM, N.C. -- The No. 2 University of Michigan field hockey team wasted no time getting back to winning after having its 14-game win streak halted last weekend, dropping the No. 20 Virginia Cavaliers by a 5-0 margin Saturday (Nov. 2) in non-conference action at Duke's Williams Field. Five different Wolverines scored in the win, while sophomore goalkeeper Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) notched her ninth shutout of the year, setting the school record for blankings in a single season.
Michigan opened up a 2-0 lead in the opening five minutes and never looked back, outshooting the Cavaliers by a 20-4 margin, including an 8-2 advantage in the first half as the Wolverines outscored UVA 3-0.
U-M's first goal came during its first penalty corner opportunity less than two minutes into the contest, as sophomore midfielder Katy Moyneur (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) scored from the doorstep of the cage off a pass from sophomore forward Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS). Hortillosa set up the Wolverines' second marker less than three minutes later, feeding senior forward Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) at the right post for an easy tap-in goal.
Sophomore forward Jenny Zangara (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills HS) made it 3-0 during the 13th minute on a free hit situation, as freshman defender Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) sent the ball from the top of the circle to Zangara at the right post for a lifted shot that beat Cavaliers' netminder Emily White.
The Wolverines' onslaught continued early in the second half when junior defender Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) blasted a penalty corner shot on net, then senior forward/midfielder Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) scooped up a rebound and lifted it past White for the score.
Hortillosa capped the scoring with 4:41 to play when she sent the ball into the cage after putting the rebound from Powers' shot over an outstretched White.
White made a career-high 11 saves in the losing effort for Virginia, while Maloney stopped the only shot she faced while picking up her ninth shutout of the year.
Michigan concludes the regular-season portion of its schedule on Sunday (Nov. 3), taking on No. 11 Duke in a non-conference affair. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. at Williams Field on the campus of Duke University.

NOTES
• Michigan's 16 wins tie the 1997 squad for the fourth-highest win total in school history. The school record for wins is 20, a mark that is attainable this with at least two matches remaining on the schedule in addition to at least one NCAA Tournament contest. Also important to note is U-M's number of losses (two), which is two fewer than the school record of four, set in 2000.
• U-M has posted 15 or more wins in each of the last six seasons under head coach Marcia Pankratz.
• With nine shutouts, the Wolverines are one blanking shy of tying the school record of 10, set in 1992.
• Molly Maloney's ninth shutout of the year establishes a school single-season record, eclipsing the mark set by Maureen Tasch in 2001. Maloney's 12.5 career shutouts tie her for fifth on U-M's career chart with Kati Oakes (1997-99).
• Lori Hillman picked up her first career point with an assist on Jenny Zangara's goal. Zangara netted her second goal of the season, marking a career high for goals in a campaign. She scored once in 14 games a year ago.
• Adrienne Hortillosa doubled her goal total for the season with her second marker and took over the team lead with her 11th and 12th assists of the year. With a goal and two assists Hortillosa tied career highs for points (4) and assists (2) in a game.
• Molly Powers notched her 14th goal of the season and is one marker shy of tying her career of 15, set as a sophomore in 2000.
