SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Texas-San Antonio grabbed a 4-0 lead after three innings and held on to beat Michigan 4-2 Sunday afternoon (March 10) at Wolff Stadium in the final contest of their three-game college baseball series.
Senior 3B Mark Schramek, who had his 13-game hit streak snapped in the Saturday contest, started a new streak as he launched a long homer to right in the bottom of the first inning for host UTSA. The Roadrunners (9-5) added a pair of runs in the second inning on three hits, with SS Matt Srp knocking in one run on a single and the second run scored on a throwing error. UTSA added the fourth run in the third inning on two singles and an infield out.
Sophomore RHP Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) worked the first seven inning and suffered his second loss of the year as he allowed seven hits and three of the four runs were earned. Brauer allowed just one hit over his last four innings of work. Freshman RHP Matt Collins (Bloomfield Village, Mich./Country Day) worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning with a pair of strikeouts.
The Wolverines (2-10) cut the lead in half to 4-2 in the sixth inning and chased starter Brian Eck (2-0) from the game. Junior SS Brock Koman (Pueblo, Colo./South HS) led off the inning with a homer to right, his second of the season, to break up the shutout bid.
Senior/junior DH Mike Sokol (Sterling Heights, Mich./DeLaSalle HS) followed with a single, and when sophomore 3B Jake Fox (Greenfield, Ind./Indianapolis Cathedral HS) drew a walk Eck was removed for LHP Hector Rodriguez. Rodriguez was credited with a pair of called strikeouts before junior catcher Alex Coleman (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands HS) singled to center to drive in Sokol. Pinch-hitter Eric Esper (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge HS) grounded out to close out the inning.
The Wolverine put the tying runs on base in the ninth inning on a single by junior OF Gino Lollio (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner HS), his second of the game, and a walk to Koman. However, Sokol was called out on strikes to end the game.
The Wolverine (2-9) are off until the scheduled home opener vs. Bowling Green on Tuesday, March 19, at 3 p.m. The next weekend action for Michigan will be March 22-24 in Lawrence, Kan., facing host Kansas on Friday and Sunday (March 22 and 24) with a single game against Oral Roberts on Saturday (March 23). The Big Ten season opens March 29 with Michigan hosting Iowa.
