Seven-Run Fifth Inning Helps Oakland Blast Wolverines

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Oakland used a seven-run fifth inning to break open a 3-2 game and coasted to a 17-3 win over the University of Michigan Wednesday afternoon (April 17) in non-conference baseball action at Ray Fisher Stadium. Oakland (8-21) used three pitchers, with lefty starter Dominic Carmosino allowing four hits and two runs in the first five innings to even his record at 4-4. Sophomore RHP Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS), the first of six Wolverine pitchers, took the loss as he allowed two runs (one earned) in his two-inning stint.
Oakland was led by its top three batters in the lineup as CF Spencer Hynes (3-for-5), SS Ryan Freiburger (2-for-4) and RF Nick DiPonio (2-for-3)combined for seven hits (7-for-12) and scored six times. The Golden Grizzlies took advantage of a season-high seven Wolverine errors as just six of the 17 runs were earned runs against Michigan's team total. All seven runs allowed in the fifth inning were unearned.
Junior SS Brock Koman (Pueblo, Colo./South HS) launched a homer to left in the fourth inning to bring the Wolverines back to within a run at 3-2, but Oakland countered with the seven-run fifth to blow the game open. Koman's homer, his third of the season, followed a leadoff single in the inning by senior/junior 1B Mike Sokol (Sterling Heights, Mich./DeLaSalle HS).
The Wolverines added an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth when freshman OF Chris Burhans (Alpharetta, Ga./The Marist School) singled to center, advanced on a passed ball on scored on the third hit of the game junior OF Gino Lollio (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner HS).
The Wolverines (11-19, 6-6 Big Ten ) host Michigan State Friday (April 21, 3 p.m.) in the start of a four-game Big Ten series with senior RHP Bobby Korecky (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) scheduled to pitch the opener. Korecky is 2-4 (4.35 ERA) in overall action and leads the Big Ten with a 0.42 ERA in his three conference starts.
Michigan hosts the Spartans in the single games on Friday and Sunday (April 21, 1 p.m.), while the teams will play a doubleheader at MSU on Saturday (April 20, 1 p.m.) at Kobs Field on campus.

Junior OF Gino Lollio with his 3-for-4 game vs. Oakland recorded his 28th career multiple-hit game and fifth career three-hit game.
Junior RHP Jonathan Moss (Lathrup Village, Mich./Southfield Lathrup HS) made his career debut as he pitched the ninth inning for the Wolverines and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits.
Junior SS Brock Koman's fourth-inning homer was his 17th career round-tripper.
