ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team battled Indiana to a 0-0 tie in double overtime Friday afternoon (Oct. 10) at U-M Soccer Field. The Hoosiers (5-6-1, 2-3-1 Big Ten) posted three shots in the two extra periods, including a shot that deflected off the crossbar, but that was the closest chance either team had in the 110 minutes of action.
Indiana's first legitimate scoring chance and only shot on net in the first half came at 32:39, when Carrie DeFreece lobbed the ball toward the goal from the left edge of the 18-yard box. The ball sailed toward the upper left corner of the net, but senior goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) was able to jump up and grab the ball for her first save of the game.
Minutes later, the Wolverines took control of the ball in Indiana territory. Sophomore Katie Kramer (Andover, Mass./Andover HS) found herself with the ball at the right edge of box and fired a shot at the right post. IU goalkeeper Shaunna Daugherty made a huge save, blocking the shot with her foot at 24:20 to keep the Hoosiers out of trouble.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net the rest of the half. Junior Robyn Vince (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) prevented the go-ahead goal at 3:30, beating out an IU player to the ball in front of the net and clearing the ball out of danger for Michigan. The Wolverines edged Indiana 5-4 in first half shots. Daugherty stopped all three shots that she faced, while Grech's only save came on the shot by DeFreece 12 minutes into the contest.
The Maize and Blue came out of the break with renewed energy, outplaying Indiana on the offensive end in the early minutes of the second half. Junior Liz Dosa (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont HS) began the charge, as she raced up the middle and made a nice pass to Kramer on the left side of the box. Kramer's shot was blocked and sailed out of bounds. On the ensuing corner kick, Vince's kick was headed by Dosa and saved by reserve goalkeeper Stacey Van Boxmeer.
On Michigan's next offensive series, Dosa had another shot on the right side, but it was blocked out of bounds once again for U-M corner kick. The Hoosiers were able to clear out the kick by Vince.
U-M continued the attack with just over eight minutes left in the game, as senior Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) went one-on-one with her defender and sent a shot on target, but Van Boxmeer made the diving stop.
The remaining minutes in regulation featured two more corner kicks by Michigan, with the Wolverines missing a scoring opportunity on both tries. Time eventually ran out on both teams and Michigan prepared for its fifth overtime game of the season.
In the first extra period, the Wolverines appeared to have won the game in the first 40 seconds. Chavez caught up to the ball on the left side and put the ball past Van Boxmeer, but the play was called offsides. One minute later, U-M dodged a bullet when Kristen Zmijewski's shot rang off the bottom of the crossbar and into the hands of reserve goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS).
Those were the only solid chances both teams got, as 10 more minutes was not enough to break the scoreless tie.
Michigan (3-3-5, 2-2-3 Big Ten) returns to U-M Soccer Field to host No. 17-ranked Purdue on Sunday (Oct. 12). The match is scheduled for 1 p.m.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the game ... "We had some momentum in the second half and I thought we could have won the game. It's disappointing. We're not playing for ties, but that's all we seem to come out with."
On Kate Morgan being out due to injury and how it affects the team ..."Kate is our leading scorer and she was playing the best soccer of her college years. We're certainly going to miss her."
