ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored seven runs in the first two innings and coasted to a 9-1 win over Hillsdale in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon (April 15) at Ray Fisher Stadium.
| Fox's two-run triple in the first moved him into a tie for the team RBI lead with 35. |
Sophomore RHP Phil Tognetti (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) moved his record to 3-2, pitching the first five innings and allowing four hits and one unearned run against Hillsdale (18-11).
The Wolverines scored three runs in the second inning when sophomore SS Nick Rudden (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) singled to left, senior 3B Brock Koman (Pueblo, Colo./South HS) was hit by a pitch for the 40th time in his career and Fox singled sharply to center to load the bases. Cantalamessa was hit by a pitch to force in a run and senior CF Gino Lollio (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner HS) lined a single to left to drive in two runs and Cantalamessa was caught in a rundown to end the inning.
Wolverine freshman 2B A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) went 3-for-4 in his second start of the season. He doubled in the third inning and added a pair of singles in the fifth and seventh innings to jump his batting average to .429 (6-for-14).
Schedit and redshirt freshman Jeff Kunkel (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest HS) were involved in one of the strangest plays of the day in the fifth inning. With one out and Kunkel on first, Scheidt singled to right and the ball was misplayed for an error. Kunkel scored on the error and when the relay throw sailed over the catcher's head Scheidt came all the way around too. Michigan had two runs on a single and two errors on the play.
Freshman RHP Craig Murray (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South HS) replaced Tognetti in the sixth inning and allowed two hits in three scoreless innings, and redshirt freshman LHP Ali Husain (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ypsilanti HS) worked a scoreless ninth to close out the win.
Michigan hosts Oakland in a non-conference game on Wednesday (April 16, 3 p.m.) with sophomore RHP Matt Collins (Bloomfield, Mich./Country Day) listed as the tentative starter. Collins is 2-1 with a 9.92 ERA.

Hillsdale starting pitcher Charlie Krebs (0-3) hit four Wolverines with pitches in the loss, plunking the "Colorado Kids" -- Nick Rudden from Englewood, Colo., twice and Brock Koman from Pueblo, Colo., and Jordan Cantalamessa from Castle Rock, Colo., once each. Against Krebs the trio went 3-for-4 with four HBPs and scored five runs, with Cantalamessa driving in two runs with a solo homer and a bases-loaded HBP.
The team RBI lead is now a three-way tie at 35 as Jake Fox and Jordan Cantalamessa each had two RBI vs. Hillsdale to pull into a tie with Brock Koman. The 35 RBI by Koman led the Big Ten in overall play following the Illinois weekend series.
Senior 3B Brock Koman had one hit vs. Hillsdale, moving his career hit total to 245, which is good for fifth on Michigan's all-time hit list. Koman needs nine hits to tie Jim Paciorek (254, 1979-82) for fourth place.
Koman's first-inning single, which extended his hitting streak to 11 games, moved his career total base total to 394, putting him into a tie for fifth place on the all-time U-M total base chart with Jason Alacaraz (394, 1996-99).
Michigan's hitting leaders after 30 games include (37 plate appearances minimum): sophomore SS Nick Rudden (.417, 25-for-60), senior 3B Brock Koman (.403, 50-for-124), DH/OF/1B Mike Sokol (.379, 39-for-103), junior C Jake Fox (.366, 41-for-112), senior OF Gino Lollio (.339, 40-for-118) and sophomore OF Matt Butler (.314, 11-for-35).
