ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior catcher Jake Fox (Greenfield, Ind./Indianapolis Cathedral HS), winner of the Ray Fisher Award as the University of Michigan baseball team's Most Valuable Player for 2003, was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the third round of the 2003 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft this afternoon (Tuesday, June 3).
| | Fox is the first U-M catcher to be drafted since David Parrish was a first-round pick of the Yankees in 2000. |
The three players selected mark the most for the Wolverines since four players were selected in 1999. The 2003 draft concludes on Wednesday (June 4).
The Cubs took Fox with the 73rd pick in the draft, the second player selected by Chicago and the eighth catcher taken in the draft. It is the second straight year that Chicago has been the first team to select a Wolverine as last season the Cubs took Wolverine LHP Rich Hill in the fourth round of the draft.
Fox, who served as a co-captain this season, hit .357 as a junior and led the Wolverines with 15 homers, 67 RBI and a .696 slugging percentage. He shared the team lead with three triples and scored 44 runs. The 67 RBI by Fox are the third best RBI total for a Wolverine and the 15 homers rank as the eighth best season total.
Koman, who also served as a co-captain this season, led the Wolverines in hitting with a .368 average as he earned the Bill Freehan Award as Michigan's top hitter for the third straight season. Koman led the team with 21 doubles, was second on the team with 55 RBI and third with eight home runs.
Brauer, who was a pre-season All-American candidate, was 0-0 with a 5.79 ERA. He started the season opener at Armstrong Atlantic State and pitched his 4.2 innings in that one appearance. Brauer, who gained national attention with a no-hitter in Cape Cod League action last summer, was drafted by Montreal in the 29th round as a high school senior in 2000.

Fox has a .333 career batting average (169-for-507) for the Wolverines with 37 doubles, 28 homers and 127 RBI ... The 67 RBI by Fox are the third best RBI total for a season by a Wolverine and the 15 homers rank as the eighth best season total ...
