CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Junior forward Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) of the University of Michigan men's soccer team netted a program-record four goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead the Wolverines over UNC Greensboro 4-3 Sunday afternoon (Sept. 14) at the Nike Carolina Classic on Fetzler Field.
Turpin handed the Wolverines (4-2) their fourth win of the season at 98:14 when the junior forward broke behind the Spartan defense and sent a line drive to the left of the keeper for the golden-goal game-winner. It marked Turpin's third career game-winning goal.
Greensboro (3-2) was the first to crack the scoreboard when James Goodman headed the ball past Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) in the first minute of play. Following a Michigan foul, Randi Patterson and Egill Atlason combined to send a header to Goodman, who knocked the ball to the back of the net for a 1-0 Spartan lead.
Patterson extended his team's lead to 2-0 at 8:57. Following another U-M foul in its end the Spartan freshman was able to convert a second free kick for a 2-0 advantage.
The Wolverines entered the scoring column at the 22:09 when Turpin received a pass from fellow junior Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS). Finding open space in front of the Spartan net, Cameron sent the ball to Turpin, who was able to lift the ball into the upper left corner of the net to cut the Greensboro advantage to 2-1.
Turpin knotted the score at 2-2 in the 76th minute when he drilled a shot to the back of the net from eight yards out for his second tally of the contest and 17th of his career to tie Cameron for first place on Michigan's all-time list. Cameron and senior tri-captain Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) assisted on the goal.
Turpin captured sole possession of first place on the all-time goals scored list just three minutes later when he banged home his own rebound at 78:55. The goal gave the Wolverines a 3-2 advantage with only 11:05 remaining in the match.
The Spartans responded, though, as James Carlson headed home his own rebound at 81:08, sending the match into extra time tied at 3-3.
With five saves between the pipes, Dzubay collected his 12th career victory.
Michigan hits the road for the second straight week, as the Wolverines travel to Milwaukee, Wis., for the Marquette Invitational to be held Friday and Sunday (Sept. 12-14) on Marquette University's Valley Fields. Michigan faces Washington on Friday at 5:30 p.m. CDT and returns to the pitch to square off with South Florida Sunday at 11:30 a.m. CDT.

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Steve Burns
On Mychal Turpin ... "Mychal Turpin is finding open space behind our opponent's defense and we are finding him with the ball. Mychal is such a dangerous player that once we find him with the ball he finishes the play."
On the game ... "This trip helped us learn a lot about our team. When we went down 1-0 in the first minute today we knew we could come back, but when they went up 2-0 with a goal eight minutes later we had to change our style of play. We moved a lot of guys forward to attack their net and knew that if we were to win it would probably be by the score of 4-3 because of our weakened defense. Fortunately for us, it worked to our advantage."
On the weekend ... "To come out of a trip 1-1 you usually do not have much momentum heading into the next weekend. However, we played two really good teams, played very well in our 1-0 loss to North Carolina and came from behind to beat UNC Greensboro this afternoon. We are going to take what we learned this weekend and apply to our two games in Milwaukee next weekend."
Junior Forward Mychal Turpin
On his goals ... "I was able to find some open space. Knox (Cameron) was able to find me when I was open for two of the goals, I put a rebound in for another and scored on a breakaway in overtime. I think we are getting used to playing together up front and that is showing in our record."
