BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team completed its weekend road trip to the Boston area with a 5-3 victory over host Boston College on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 7), completing a sweep of games on the road. Senior April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) led the Wolverines with four goals, including a natural hat trick in the first half.
With the win, the Wolverines improved to .500 on the season, moving their record to 2-2 after opening the season with a pair of losses.
Fronzoni's barrage of goals began in the first half as she scored three consecutive times to give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead and chased Eagles goalkeeper Lauren Hill from the cage. Boston College responded with a pair of markers late in the half to pull within one at the break, but junior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican) returned U-M to a two-goal lead at 4-2, scoring off a rebound to open the second half. BC cut the lead to one again with just over 20 minutes left in the game, but Fronzoni secured the win, sliding a goal past Eagles goalkeeper Jillian Savoy with just over seven minutes left.
Michigan outshot the Eagles 14-10, but BC out-cornered the Wolverines by a 9-6 margin. Junior Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) stopped three shots in the win, while BC's Hill and Savoy combined for four saves.
Michigan will return home next weekend to host Ohio and New Hampshire in non-conference action at Ocker Field. The Wolverines will face the Ohio Bobcats at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, followed by a 1 p.m. meeting with the New Hampshire Wildcats on Sunday, Sept. 14.
