This Week's Lineup -- vs. Michigan State/Maryland
The No. 10-ranked Wolverines (10-4, 2-1 Big Ten) will kick off a four-game homestand this weekend with matches against Michigan State and Maryland. On Saturday (Oct. 16), Michigan will sqaure off against the No. 3 Spartans (13-1, 3-0 Big Ten) before wrapping up the weekend against No. 4 Maryland (12-2, 2-1 ACC) on Sunday (Oct. 17). Both games are slated for 1 p.m. starts at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Challenge Cup
Saturday's match between Michigan and Michigan State will be the second fall contest in the Pontiac Challenge Cup, a trophy awarded three times throughout the athletic year to the University with the most success against the other. At the end of the year, the winning school receives a crystal trophy, while each school's athletic scholarship fund will split a $150,000 donation from Pontiac. U-M holds a 0.5-0 lead in the competition for the fall portion of the Cup by virtue of volleyball's 3-1 win over the Spartans last Wednesday (Oct. 6), while the winner of Saturday's game will earn another point for the fall standings. Men's and women's cross country, football, women's soccer and volleyball also compete in the fall portion of the Challenge Cup.
MSU Game to Air on Comcast Local
Comcast Local will air Saturday's game against Michigan State will be televised via tape delay on Thursday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. The game can be seen on channel 8 - by those who have Comcast cable - in most of Metro Detroit, Channel 18 in the Royal Oak area and channel 98 in the Flint area. Comcast Local is a new network that features local events and entertainment and high school and collegiate sports.
Scouting the Spartans
Michigan leads the all-time series with Michigan State, 29-21-6 and has won nine of the last 10 meetings with the Spartans. The two intrastate rivals squared off twice in East Lansing, Mich. last season, securing close one-goal victories on each occasion. In the regular-season match, junior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican) tallied the only goal U-M would need early in the game while freshman goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) made 10 stops to lead U-M to a 1-0 shutout victory. One month later, the Wolverines handed the Spartans a 2-1 loss in the NCAA second round as juniors Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) and Blake nothced first-half goals to propel U-M into the NCAA Final Four. Scouting the Terrapins
Michigan trails in the all-time series with Maryland, 1-3, with its only victory coming in the 2001 NCAA championship game. This Sunday's match will mark the Terrapins first visit to Ann Arbor. In last season's meeting between the two programs, Maryland halted a four-game winning streak by the Wolverines, handing Michigan a 4-2 loss in College Park, Md. Despite goals by senior Stephanie Johnson and junior Jessica Blake, the Wolverines could not recover from an early first-half decifit. For more information on Maryland, visit www.umterps.com.

After splitting games against Pacific and Iowa over the weekend, the Wolverines dropped a position for the third week in a row -- to the No. 10 spot -- in latest STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, released on Tuesday (Oct. 12). Statistically Speaking ...
National statistics, compiled by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), are released every Tuesday during the season. Senior Jessica Blake ranks fourth in the nation in goals (17) and fifth in goals per game (1.214), points (40) and points per games (2.857). Senior Adrienne Hortillosa also ranks among the national leaders in points with 10th (32) in points and 16th in points per game (2.286) while holding the eighth spot in assists (10) and 15th in assists per game (0.714).
Michigan leads the Big Ten Conference in six major statistical categories -- goals (58), goals per game (4.14), points (153), assists (37), assists per game (2.64) and shots (275). Individually, senior Adrienne Hortillosa leads the conference in assists and assists per game while ranking fourth in points and points per game. Senior Jessica Blake holds the second spot in goals, goals per game, points and points per game. The two U-M seniors share the conference lead in game-winning goals (4). Lending a Helping Hand
With 10 assists this season, senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa has brought her career total to 37 helpers during her four seasons at Michigan to gain sole possession of the third spot on U-M's all-time assists list. Hortillosa needs 19 assists to reach the second position, currently held by Courtney Reid (1997-2000) with 56 career assists. Two-time NFHCA All-American Catherine Foreman (1998-2001) owns the U-M record for most career assists with 61.

Climbing the Charts
With five points against Pacific and Iowa, senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa brought her career total points to 97 through her four seasons at Michigan, moving her into the sixth spot on Michigan's all-time points list, where she is tied with Molly Powers (1999-2002). Hortillosa needs three more points to reach the fifth position, currently held by two-time All-American Kristi Gannon (100, 2000-03). With an assist against Iowa, senior Jessica Blake also nearly cracked the top 10 on the list, ranking 11th with 82 career points. She needs five more points to reach the 10th spot, held by Marty Maugh (87, 1979-82).

Iron Women
Senior captain Katy Moyneur (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) has not missed a single game during her four seasons at Michigan, starting all 82 U-M contests during that time. Senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa has also seen action in the Wolverines' 82 games -- with 65 starts -- during her four years while junior Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) has started in 59 consecutive games in her third season at Michigan.
Free Hits
The Wolverines are 10-21 in all-time meetings against ACC teams (3-1 vs. Duke, 2-3 vs. Virginia, 1-3 vs. Maryland, 3-7 vs. North Carolina, 2-7 vs. Wake Forest).
With a win against Pacific, fifth-year senior goalkeeper Molly Maloney needs just three more wins to reach the second spot on U-M's career wins list, currently held by Maureen Tasch (32, 1999-2001).
Junior/sophomore Katie Morris has scored a goal in each of the Wolverines' last five games.
The Wolverines have outshot their opponents in each of the last 12 contests.
U-M owns a 5-1 home record this season, outscoring its opponents 28-6 at Ocker Field.
Just a week after earning her first collegiate point, sophomore Kara Lentz earned her first collegiate goal against Iowa (Oct. 10).
On the Horizon
The Maize and Blue will play its final two regular-season home contests next weekand against California and Ohio State at Phyllis Ocker Field. On Friday (Oct. 22), U-M will sqaure off against the Golden Bears at 3 p.m. before returning for its home finale on Saturday (Oct. 23) against Big Ten foe Ohio State at 2 p.m.
