LAFAYETTE, La. -- Harvard senior RHP Trey Hendricks went 3-for-4 with a run-scoring double as the designated hitter and pitched a complete-game 10-hitter as the Crimson defeated the University of Michigan baseball team 5-3 Sunday morning (March 21) at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field on the campus of Louisiana-Lafayette. Hendricks (1-1), who saved Harvard's 3-1 win over the Wolverines (5-8) on Saturday, pitched with the lead most of the game and was in command for the win.
Junior RHP Michael Penn (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian HS) went the first 6.1 innings for the Wolverines and took the loss as he allowed seven hits and four runs, three earned. Sophomore 3B A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) paced the Wolverine attack with three hits, including a double and his team-leading third homer. The home run came in the sixth to cut Harvard's lead to 3-2.
Harvard (4-3) took the lead in the first on a leadoff walk to RF Lance Salsgiver, a single by Hendricks and a passed ball followed by an infield groundout.
The Wolverines tied the game in the second inning when sophomore/freshman catcher Matt Rademacher (Bay City, Mich./Central HS) singled and reached second as the ball eluded the centerfielder for an error. Sophomore SS Jeremy Goldschmeding (Martin, Mich./Allegan HS) followed with a line-drive triple and the score was 1-1.
Harvard grabbed a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning on a leadoff double by LF Chris Mackey and a single by RF Salsgiver, who advanced to second on the throw to the infield. With runners on second and third and no outs the Crimson scored on a grounder deflected by pitcher Penn that resulted in a 1-4-3 out at first. The second run scored on a wild pitch.
Harvard added runs in the seventh on a squeeze bunt and in the eighth with 2B Zak Farkes and Hendricks hitting back-to-back doubles to close out the scoring for the Crimson.
Michigan's last chance came in the top eighth inning trailing 4-2 as junior RF Matt Butler (Lombard, Ill./Driscoll Catholic) and junior LF Chris Burhans (Alpharetta, Ga./Marist School) opened the inning with singles, but Scheidt popped to the pitcher and junior/sophomore 1B Jeff Kunkel (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest HS) hit a fly to left. Junior Kyle Bohm (Stevens Point, Wis./Area HS) collected a pinch-hit single to drive in Butler and extend his career best hitting streak to nine games. Hendricks retired the final four Wolverines to earn the win.
The Wolverines face Oakland University in the home opener on Friday (March 26, 3 p.m.) at Ray Fisher Stadium.
