MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Junior 1B Kyle Bohm (Stevens Point, Wis./Area HS) smashed his second three-run homer of the game in the top of the ninth inning to lift the University of Michigan to a 14-13 non-conference baseball win over host Central Michigan Wednesday afternoon (April 14) at Theunissen Stadium.
Bohm, who leads the Wolverines with a .407 batting average and a .488 on-base percentage, was 2-for-3 with three walks and six RBI with his two homers to pace the Wolverines (16-12) to their fourth consecutive win.
Central Michigan (16-14) suffered its second last-at-bat loss in two days in a game the Chippewas led 5-0 after two innings and had outstanding performances by RF J.T. Jones (4-for-5 with five runs scored), 3B Jim Geldhof (5-for-6 with four runs scored) and DH Bryan Mitzel (4-for-6). The three CMU sluggers, hitting two, three and five in the lineup, combined for 13 hits and 10 runs in the loss.
The Wolverines trailed 5-0 after three innings but scored six runs in the fourth inning as the rally was started by senior DH Brandon Roberts (Arlington, Texas/Martin HS) collecting his 40th career double. Sophomore shortstop Jeremy Goldschmeding (Allegan, Mich./Allegan HS) walked and sophomore CF Mike Schmidt (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) singled to put the Wolverines on the scoreboard.
Junior LF Nick Rudden (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) singled to cut the margin to 5-2 and bring the tying run to the plate. With two outs and two runners still on base Bohm smashed his first homer of the afternoon over the fence in left and the score was tied at 5-5. Bohm's homer was his third of the season, tied for the team lead.
Moments later sophomore 3B A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Lahser HS) untied the game as he hit his fourth homer of the year and put the Wolverines on top 6-5. The back-to-back homers by Bohm and Scheidt marked the first time since 1998 that the Wolverines had turned that trick on the road.
CMU bounced back to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth, but the Wolverines scored three times for a 9-6 lead in the top of the fifth inning as Roberts and Goldschmeding singled to start the inning and Rudden was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sophomore 2B Chris Getz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS), who chipped in with another three-hit game, doubled to the fence in left for two runs, and Rudden scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.
CMU collected three two-run homers to keep fighting back as Geldhof hit his fourth homer in the sixth, and after Scheidt's two-run single gave Michigan a three-run lead in the seventh at 11-8, CMU's Kurtis Wells hit his fifth homer and pinch-hitter Dan Griesbaum hit his first homer and the hosts led 12-11 heading to the ninth inning.
Freshman CF Eric Rose (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield HS), who entered the game as a defensive replacement, opened the ninth with a single off CMU closer David LeMieux and Getz drew a walk to reach base for the fourth time in the game. Junior RF Matt Butler (Lombard, Ill./Driscoll Catholic), who had three hits in the game, dropped down a bunt and a fine play by CMU resulted in a force at third. Bohm hit a 3-2 offering from LeMieux, who was seeking his sixth save, out of the park and the Wolverines were back on top 14-12.
Junior RHP Phil Tognetti (Newhall, Calif./William S. Hart HS), the fourth Wolverine pitcher, collected his third win of the season and second out of the bullpen in two games.
CMU sent seven batters to the plate in the ninth and scored one run, but freshman RHP Dan Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice), the fourth Michigan pitcher of the ninth inning and the seventh of the game, recorded the final two outs for his first career save.
Getz and Butler helped set the offensive table as usual as each had three hits and reached base four times. Bohm reached base five times and drove in six runs from his third slot in the lineup and Scheidt reached base four times. Both Bohm and Scheidt had three two-out RBI.
The Wolverines host Illinois in a four-game Big Ten series this weekend. The weekend starts with a single, nine-inning game on Friday (April 16) with senior/junior RHP Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS), 1-2 with a 6.23 ERA, on the mound.
N O T E S
The two-homer performance by 1B Kyle Bohm was the first for a Wolverine since Jake Fox hit two at Eastern Michigan on May 14, 2003.
The six RBI for Kyle Bohm marks the season high for a Wolverine and the most since Jordan Cantalamessa had seven in the 16-12 win at Oklahoma last season (March 7).
The back-to-back homers by Kyle Bohm and A.J. Scheidt in the fourth inning at Central Michigan were the first for the Wolverines since Brock Koman, MVP in 2001 and 2002, and 2003 MVP Jake Fox hit homers vs. Penn State in the fifth inning last year (April 26). The last time Michigan had back-to-back homers on the road came at Houston in 1998 (March 8) with 1997 MVP Brian Kalczynski and 2000 MVP David Parrish hitting the homers.
Former Wolverine catcher Jason Wuerfel (2000-03), winner of the Wolverine Award for spirit and leadership a year ago, was on hand at the game at CMU. Wuerfel will be playing independent pro baseball in New York for the Elmira Pioneers in the Northeast League starting in May.
Michigan's hitting leaders after 28 games are: 1B Kyle Bohm at .407 (44-for-108), Jeremy Goldschmeding at .349 (29-for-83), 3B A.J. Scheidt at .333 (38-for-114), Matt Butler at .333 (34-for-102), Jeff Kunkel (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest HS) at .333 (25-for-75), OF Eric Rose at .333 (21-for-63), Chris Getz at .324 (35-for-108) and Brandon Roberts at .307 (27-for-88).
