COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior/junior RHP Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) pitched a complete game eight-hitter and junior 1B Kyle Bohm (Stevens Point, Wis./Area HS) knocked in the winning runs as Michigan defeated Ohio State by a 6-1 margin in Big Ten baseball action Friday (Apr. 23) night at Bill Davis Stadium.
The win was the fourth straight for the Wolverines (20-14, 8-5) in Bill Davis Stadium, tied Michigan for first place with Ohio State (18-15, 8-5 Big Ten) and Minnesota and marked head coach Rich Maloney's 50th win at Michigan. The win was also the 20th on the season for the Wolverines marking the 30th consecutive seasons for Michigan baseball.
Brauer (3-2) earned the 10th win of his career allowing just one run in the contest. It was Brauer's third career complete game and his second against Ohio State. He allowed just three hits after the fifth inning and took command in the seventh inning when the Buckeyes put runners on first and third with nobody out and he struck of the next three batters on the minimum nine pitches.
He also retired the final three batters of the game in the ninth inning after OSU put runners on first and second with nobody out in the final frame.
Bohm, who leads the Wolverines with a .405 batting average, went 3-for-5 in the win and his bases loaded two-run single in the fifth inning proved to be the game-winning hit.
Michigan snapped the 1-1 tie with a three-run fifth inning with Bohm's single and junior RF Matt Butler's (Lombard, Ill./Driscoll Catholic) squeeze bunt providing the runs. Senior DH Brandon Roberts (Arlington, Texas/Martin HS) and freshman shortstop Leif Mahler (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep), making a hometown start, opened the inning with a pair of singles and with one out freshman CF Eric Rose walked to load the bases to set the stage for Bohm and Butler.
Rose drew his third consecutive walk to lead off the seventh inning and scored on a two-out double by freshman LF Brad Roblin (Wayland, Mass./Rivers School) to make the score 5-1.
Bohm singled to lead off the ninth inning and he scored the final run of the game on a sac fly by sophomore 3B A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS).
The Wolverines opened the scoring in the fourth inning with freshman CF Rose, making his first start in the second slot in the lineup, reached on a four-pitch walk and moved to third on a hit-and-run single by Bohm. Butler knocked in the first run with a fielder's choice grounder. Rose drew three walks in the game and scored each time.
Ohio State tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as LF Steve Caravati and 1B Jedidiah Stephen opened the frame with singles. With runners on first and third and one out SS Brett Garrard lined the ball up the middle. Wolverine freshman SS Mahler made a great snag of the liner and his throw to first to try for an inning-ending double play hit the first base coach. OSU 3B Jason Zoeller singled up the middle to tie the score.
Mahler was 1-for-2, collecting his first career Big Ten hit in the three-run fifth inning. He walked twice and had two put outs and an assist.
Bohm paced the 11-hit attack with three singles, while sophomore 2B Chris Getz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS), Scheidt and Roberts each had two hits.
Michigan continues the weekend series with a doubleheader Saturday (Apr. 24, 4:05 p.m.) with the probable starters including sophomore RHP Derek Feldkamp (Adrian, Mich./Blissfield HS) with a 4-3 record and a 1.93 ERA and junior RHP Michael Penn (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian) 3-2 with a 4.24 ERA.
