EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State scored four runs in the first inning and four in the second and coasted to a 13-3 Big Ten win over the University of Michigan baseball team Saturday afternoon (May 1) at Kobs Field. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader postponed by rain.
The four-game series will conclude in Michigan's Ray Fisher Stadium on Sunday (May 2, 1 p.m.) with Michigan (23-16, 11-7 Big Ten) and Michigan State (22-19, 9-9 Big Ten) playing two games. MSU will be the home team in the seven-inning first game, while Michigan will host the second game of the day, which is the scheduled nine-inning game.
MSU senior DH David Miller led the Spartan attack on Saturday with six RBI, including a two-run single in the first inning, a three-run homer in the second inning and a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Miller and freshman LF Ryan Basham hit back-to-back homers in the second inning as the Spartans tagged Michigan sophomore starter RHP Derek Feldkamp (Adrian, Mich./Blissfield HS) with the loss.
Feldkamp (4-5) entered the game leading the Big Ten with a 2.05 ERA but allowed eight hits and eight runs, all earned, in his two-inning outing as his ERA jumped to 3.40.
MSU used five consecutive hits to grab the 4-0 lead in the first, with senior 3B James Moreno's RBI single the proving to be the "gamer," and it was followed by a run-scoring double by 1B Sean Walker and Miller's single. The Spartans had two outs in the second before getting back-to-back walks followed by the back-to-back homers.
Michigan scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings against MSU LHP John Dwan (3-0) with the same players providing the offense. Sophomore 3B A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) collected Michigan's first hit of the game with two outs in the second inning, and he scored on a single by senior DH Brandon Roberts (Arlington, Texas/Martin HS).
Junior 1B Kyle Bohm (Stevens Point, Wis./Area HS) hit his team-leading 16th double in the third inning and scored on Scheidt's two-out single. The fourth-inning run came as Roberts singled and scored on a sac fly by Bohm. MSU CF Alan Cattrysse made an excellent catch in left-center as Bohm's bid for a grand slam turned into just the one run.
MSU moved the lead to 13-3 with five runs in three innings off freshman LHP Michael McCormick (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich HS) before the Wolverines closed out the scoring in the sixth inning as sophomore 2B Chris Getz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./.South HS) collected his second single of the game, moved along on a single by Bohm and scored on a two-out pinch single by junior Chris Burhans (Alpharetta, Ga./Marist School). Getz, Bohm, Scheidt and Roberts each had two hits for the Wolverines.
Junior RHP Craig Murray (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) worked a scoreless sixth inning and recorded a pair of strikeouts.
Michigan hosts the two games on Sunday (May 2, 1 p.m.) starting with the seven-inning game with Michigan State as the home team as the makeup of Saturday's rainout with junior RHP Michael Penn (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian), 4-2 with a 4.50 ERA, scheduled to start. In the second game, the nine-inning game with Michigan as the home team, junior/sophomore LHP Paul Hammond (Mason, Ohio/Mason HS), 2-0 with a 4.89 ERA, is scheduled to pitch.
