YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team opened the 2004 season Saturday afternoon (Aug. 21) with a 3-1 exhibition victory over Eastern Michigan at Scicluna Field. The Wolverines used two first-half goals and one score in the waning seconds of the game to earn the road win over the Eagles.
Michigan got off to a quick start, as junior Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) collected a deflected shot by freshman Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and blasted the rebound past the outstretched arms of EMU goalkeeper Nikki Allen and into the lower left corner to put the Wolverines ahead 1-0 just 6:46 into the contest. U-M had a chance to increase its lead nearly 10 minutes later, as senior Laura Tanchon (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) sent Michigan's first of six corner kicks to freshman Kandice McLaughlin (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real HS), but her attempt was off the mark.
Eastern Michigan netted the equalizer at 24:14, when Jill Kehler's corner kick found Shannon McIntyre, who was able to head the ball past the reach of sophomore goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) to tie the score at 1-1.
Dobbyn, who finished with a game-high four shots, scored the game-winner just three minutes later, corralling a loose ball off a U-M corner kick and faking out a defender at the top of the box before firing a shot into the lower right corner of the cage to put the Wolverines on top 2-1 at 27:03. The Eagles looked to knot things up before the end the half, but Tuura was able to come out and make a diving stop on a shot by Jessica Hupe at 31:55.
Michigan continued to pressure the EMU defense in the early stages of the second half, with sophomore Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) sending a shot from center just high over the crossbar before freshman Jamie Artsis' (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) attempt from the left endline was saved by Allen at the near post.
Hupe found herself deep in U-M territory once again and made a touch back to a streaking Trisha Roberts, but her blast at 71:27 went high and out of play. The Eagles' last solid opportunity at a tying goal came with 15 minutes remaining, but Hupe was unable to get a foot on a long serve near the left post.
Senior Liz Dosa (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont HS) added an insurance goal in final 10 seconds of the game, as she beat her defender down the left center of the field and fired a nice shot at the far post to seal the victory.
The Wolverines will open the 2004 regular season with two weekend matches against a pair of national powerhouses in Texas. U-M will take on Texas A&M next Friday (Aug. 27) at 8 p.m. CDT in College Station, Texas, and conclude the weekend with a match against Texas on Sunday (Aug. 29) at 7:30 p.m. CDT in Austin, Texas.
