MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The 16th-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team lost a 3-1 exhibition game tonight (Thursday, Aug. 26) to Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Engelmann Field. The Wolverines trailed 1-0 at the half, but came back to tie the game early in the second frame on a goal by sophomore defender Kevin Savitskie (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS). UWM, however, scored twice in the final 10 minutes of the game to secure the victory. The exhibition contest marked the first action of the 2004 season for both teams.
The game started slowly with each team playing very disciplined defensively. The Panthers took control of the game at 37:07Â into the opening half when midfielder Chris Brisson sent a 40-yard chip shot over the head of U-M goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS). The teams played even for the remainder of the half and the Wolverines trailed 1-0 at intermission.
Michigan came out strong in the second half and tied the game in at 57:48. Sophomore defender Kevin Hall (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central HS) fired a shot from just outside of the box and Savitskie redirected it into the net from 10 yards out.
With the score tied at 1-1, the two teams played to a standstill until the final 10 minutes of the game. UWM took a 2-1 lead in with 5:58 to play when forward Cliff Ellsworth scored from 25 yards out. The Panthers then sealed the game with a score by Antou Jallow with less than one minute to play.
The Wolverines will open the regular season on Wednesday, Sept. 1, with a road game at No. 10 Connecticut. That match will take place at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "It was a good exhibition game to have. A lot of players got in the game so we got a good sense of our team and the kind of depth we are going to have this year. The guys played hard. Both teams were very disciplined in the first half, especially on defense. The game opened up a little after the 65th minute; both team started to stretch the field a little."
On his first impressions of the team ... "This team has a lot of fight. That is going to be really important for us with the difficult schedule we have and the number of games on the road. I thought there were a lot of bright sports. I thought Michael O'Reilly, Matt Niemeyer and Steve Hecker all played very well. Trai Blanks came in and gave us some good minutes as well as Craig VandeVusse and Michael Parke."
On what the team did well and needs to work on ... "I think in the central midfield we need to look to move forward with the first touch. This game was very tactical and there wasn't a lot of space behind the ball. I think we were a little too slow to recognize our chances in the central midfield. I would like to see us look to take the appropriate chances in the midfield versus playing negatively and keeping possession for the duration of the match."
