ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- USA Water Polo recently announced that University of Michigan women's water polo driver Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) has been invited to play in the 2005 Speedo Top 40 Tournament. The three-day event will be held Nov. 4-6 at the National Training Center in Los Alamitos, Calif.

"Shana is one of those players that makes things happen," U-M head coach Matt Anderson said. "Her drive and determination is far ahead of the normal athlete, this allows her to create the situations she does which opens up our offense. She was the nation's third leading scorer last year and has the ability to score against any player she faces -- that is why she is getting a shot at being in the national team system. You always need to have that person that is capable of igniting a whole team and Shana presents that for us."
The tournament is intended to give the selected players an opportunity to show their talent and ability against the best women's water polo athletes around the nation. The 40 players will split into four teams. The event also gives national team coaches a chance to evaluate players for the 2008 Olympic Games, which will be held in Beijing, China.
