Streifler in Singles Round of 16 at ITA Midwest Regional

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Debra Streifler (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) is the lone University of Michigan women's tennis player remaining at the 2005 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, as she won her first two matches in the 64-player main singles draw Saturday (Oct. 22) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Four other Wolverines were unable to advance past the round of 32 in singles, while U-M's lone remaining doubles pairing exited the 64-team draw in the second round earlier in the morning.
Streifler picked up her first victory of the fall season with a 7-5, 6-1 decision over Notre Dame's No. 54-ranked Brook Buck in the first round, then kept rolling with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Indiana's Brianna Williams to move on to the round of 16. Streifler will meet No. 9 seed Nischella Reddy of Minnesota tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 23) at 1 p.m.
Senior Nina Yaftali (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake HS) and freshman Chisako Sugiyama (Parsippany, New Jersey/The Montclair Kimberley Academy) fell in the doubles round of 16, as Northwestern's Nazlie Ghazal and Georgia Rose came away with an 8-4 victory.
Four U-M players also earned first-round victories in singles but were unable to get out of the second round.
Junior Elizabeth Exon (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS), the No. 16 seed, posted an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Toledo's Eunice Paravinci before losing 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4 to Purdue's Randi Schuler.
Sugiyama extended her winning streak to five matches with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Ohio State's Julie Blackmore but then suffered her first collegiate loss to Northwestern's No. 11 seed Georgia Rose, 7-5, 6-3.
Sophomore Allie Shafner (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) defeated Western Michigan's No. 109-ranked Rattiya Hiranrat 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-4 in the opening round but had her seven-match winning streak snapped with a 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 loss to Illinois' Momei Qu.
Yaftali earned her first win of the fall with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ohio State's Caitlin O'Keefe but then exited the tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Northwestern's No. 50-ranked Alexis Prousis.
Junior Kara Delicata (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich Secondary School) also competed in the main singles draw, falling 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to DePaul's Gergana Ganeva in the first round. Delicata also dropped a consolation match to Northwestern's Jamie Peisel later in the day, 6-0, 6-0.
