Hoyer Nets Two Goals in U-M Shutout Against Pacific
Event Recap| Boxscore
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Freshman Stephanie Hoyer (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) registered her second career multi-goal game to lead the No. 10-ranked Unversity of Michigan field hockey team to a 3-0 win against Pacific on Sunday (Oct. 23) at California's Maxwell Family Field.
Michigan tallied back-to-back goals late in the opening half to hold a two-goal cushion at the halftime intermission. Following a penalty corner at the 22:43 mark, junior Kara Lentz (Manchester, Mass./St. Paul's School) slammed in a rebound to earn her first career game-winning goal and give the Wolverines the only advantage they would need. Hoyer scored her first marker of the contest less than four minutes later, tipping a shot from freshman Erin Dallas (Marlow, N.H./Keene HS).
The Wolverines, who outshot the Tigers 11-7 in the game, pushed their lead to 3-0 in the closing minute of the game when Hoyer sent a hard shot past Pacific goalkeeper Kelly Miller at 69:31. Senior/junior Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) earned an assist on the play.
The U-M backfield held Pacific to just one shot on goal, and junior goaltender Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) only needed to make one save to earn her fourth shutout of the season. In the Tiger cage, Miller made one save on Michigan's four shots on goal.
The Wolverines will wrap up the regular-season portion of their schedule at Phyllis Ocker Field next weekend, hosting Iowa and Louisville. U-M will square off against the Hawkeyes at 3 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 28) before facing Louisville at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 30).

Michigan Head Coach Nancy Cox
On the team's momentum... "We keep doing what we need to do, progressing along. Additional people are making contributions. We have greater depth in our lineup now. We're able to go further into the number of kids we have to get help on the field. This is where we expected to be in terms of just making progress each and every match."
U-M Senior Captain Lori Hillman
On the game... "We felt really good. I think we really connected as a team. We had some really good patterns to the sideline and through the middle. It was a really good team effort."
On next weekend's regular-season finale... "It's hard to think that I only have two more regular-season games at Ocker Field. It's going to be a very emotional day. It's really been hitting me the past couple of games that my time as a Wolverine is coming to a very quick end. We're going to extend it as much as possible."
