ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Justin Petty's two-out, two-run, pinch triple put Iowa in the lead in the sixth inning and the Hawkeyes held on to beat the University of Michigan 7-6 in Big Ten Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon (April 10) in Ray Fisher Stadium.
The win was the third of the weekend for the visiting Hawkeyes (9-15, 5-3 Big Ten) and puts Iowa in a tie for third place after two weeks of Big Ten action. The loss drops Michigan (18-10, 1-7) into last place in the conference standings. Six of the seven Michigan losses in Big Ten play have been by three runs or less with four one-run losses.
Lefty Chris Zinn (1-1), the third of five Iowa pitchers, collected the win. Lefty Tim Gudex worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his third save of the season and the series. For the weekend Gudex allowed Michigan just one run and two hits in 4.1 innings while racking up the three saves.
Michigan junior RHP Derek Feldkamp (Adrian, Mich./Blissfield HS) worked the first 5.1 innings and was charged with the loss. Feldkamp (4-2) had five strikeouts and did not walk a batter, but he did hit four Iowa batters and three of them scored. In his last two starts, losses to Minnesota and Iowa, he has hit seven batters and six have scored.
In the Iowa sixth inning Feldkamp hit CF Jesse Brownell and gave up back-to-back singles to 3B Andy Cox and 2B Jason White. White's single knocked in Brownell to cut Michigan's lead to 6-5.
Senior/junior LHP Paul Hammond (Mason, Ohio/Mason HS) replaced Feldkamp. He retired the first batter but surrendered Petty's game-winning triple that dropped just inside the line in right. Hammond allowed just two hits in his 3.2 innings and he retired 10 of the 11 batters he faced after Petty's triple, but the damage had been done.
The Wolverines grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning -- U-M scored first in each of the four games -- as sophomore CF Eric Rose (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield HS) singled to left and advanced to third base on a stolen base and a wild pitch. He scored on a groundout by senior RF Matt Butler (Lombard, Ill./Driscoll Catholic).
Junior SS Chris Getz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS) made the score 2-0 in the first inning when he singled, moved to second on a stolen base and scored on a two-out single by catcher Jeff Kunkel (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest).
Iowa scored twice in the second inning on a two-run homer by Brownell, the first Hawkeye hit of the game, and took a 4-2 lead with two runs in the third inning.
Junior 3B A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) opened the fourth inning with a double, moved to third on a fly ball and scored on a grounder by freshman 2B Doug Pickens (West Bloomfield, Mich./Brother Rice). Rose extended the fourth inning as he reached on a two-out error, and Butler smashed his team-leading fourth homer of the year off the Track Building behind the fence in right. Butler has doubled his career home run total from four to eight this season and he ranks second on the team with 29 RBI.
The Wolverines were not finished in the fourth as Getz singled, reached second on a wild pitch and scored on another two-out hit, a single by senior 1B Kyle Bohm (Stevens, Point, Wis./Area HS), making the score 6-4.
However, the four-run fourth was the final scoring for the Wolverines as the Iowa bullpen clamped down on U-M. Zinn worked 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit, Aaron Reasland allowed three hits in 2.2 scoreless innings and Gudex faced just three batters in the ninth.
Bohm paced the 12-hit Wolverine attack with three hits, his fifth three-hit game of the year, and Getz and freshman DH Derek VanBuskirk (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair HS) each had a pair of singles.
The Wolverines head to Illinois to face the first-place Fighting Illini in a four-game Big Ten weekend series that opens with a single game Friday (April 15, 6:35 p.m. CDT) with fifth-year senior Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) on the mound. Brauer is 4-1 with a 2.11 ERA.
N O T E S
• Senior 1B Kyle Bohm has been a constant force in the Wolverine lineup the past two seasons following his transfer from Auburn. Bohm drove in eight runs in the weekend series against Iowa, giving him 36 for the season and 88 RBI in 88 games over the past two seasons.
• Junior Chris Getz notched four stolen bases in the series against Iowa, pushing his team-leading season total to 17, the most since All-America shortstop Barry Larkin (1983-85) stole 17 bases in 1985. The 17 stolen bases tie Getz with Larkin, Mark Grenkoski (1975) and Robert Gilhooley (1965) for the 10th best stolen base season in U-M history. The record is 38 by Jim Durham (1986-89), who swiped 38 bases in 1987.
• By taking three of four games from the Wolverines it marks the first series win for the Hawkeyes against the Wolverines since winning three of four games in Iowa City in 1991. The last time Iowa won three of four in Fisher Stadium was 1990.
• Michigan's leading hitters after 28 games are 2B Chris Getz (42-for-103, .408), OF Matt Butler (46-for-118, .390), 1B Kyle Bohm (39-for-105, .371), C Jeff Kunkel (26-for-71, .366), 3B A.J. Scheidt (27-for-90, .300) and 3B/DH Derek VanBuskirk (13-for-44, 295).
• In other Big Ten action on Sunday co-leaders Minnesota and Illinois each lost for the first time as Indiana topped Minnesota 8-6 and Michigan State beat Illinois 11-9. Penn State blanked Northwestern, 3-0, while Ohio State topped Purdue 4-2.
