Bohm, Richard Highlight Second Sweep Over Hoosiers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- On Senior Day at Ray Fisher Stadium it was Kyle Bohm (Stevens Point, Wis./Area HS), with five hits and four RBI, leading the upperclassmen and sophomore/freshman LHP Clayton Richard (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon HS), with two saves, pacing the underclassmen as the University of Michigan baseball team completed a weekend sweep over Indiana, 8-5 and 9-4, on Sunday (May 15).
The sweep gives Michigan (35-14, 14-11 Big Ten) a seven-game winning streak and wins in 16 of the last 18 games and pulls the Wolverines into a tie with Ohio State (14-11) for fifth place in the Big Ten standings with a week to play.
Bohm was 5-for-9 in the doubleheader, raising his batting average to .393 as he moved his team-leading RBI total to 53. Bohm has 105 RBI in his two seasons as a Wolverine.
The Wolverines used a five-run fifth inning for a comeback win in the opener as junior RHP Derek Feldkamp (Adrian, Mich./Blissfield HS) pitch 2.2 innings out of the bullpen to record his team-leading eighth win. Richard retired the final five betters of the opener to record his fourth save of the season.
Junior shortstop Leif Mahler (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) was 3-for-3 in the opener. His game-winning single snapped a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning as Michigan battled from behind twice in the opener, trailing 2-1 and 4-2.
Senior DH Matt Butler (Lombard, Ill./Driscoll Catholic) drove in three runs in the opener, pushing his RBI total to 44 on the season. He singled to tie the game 2-2 in the third, drove in the third run during the fifth-inning rally and closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning of the seven-inning opener.
Senior/junior Drew Taylor (Toronto, Ontario/Upper Canada College) gave up a run in the top of the first of the nightcap and setteled down to pitch 7.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs before turning the game over to Richard in the eighth.Taylor is 3-2.
Richard retired all four batters he faced for his fifth save, getting all nine batters he faced in both games as he lowered his ERA to 1.91 and his opponents batting average to .210 (21 for 100).
The Wolverines exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning of the night cap to put the game away early. Highlights of the seven-run first included a bunt single by junior 2B Chris Getz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS) followed by a hit by pitch, putting sophomore Eric Rose (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield HS) on first. Bohm singled to tie the score at 1-1 and senior/junior catcher Jeff Kunkel (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) had the second-game "gamer" with a sacrifice fly that scored Rose.
Junior 3B A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) had a two-run triple and freshman RF Doug Pickens (West Bloomfield, Mich./Brother Rice) had a two-run double to close out the scoring in the first inning.
Pickens had two doubles in the second game and three hits in the doubleheader and six hits for the weekend, while Kunkel was 2-for-4 in the nightcap and also had three hits on the day. Kunkel, who has hits in 10 straight games and in 21 of the last 22 games, had seven hits in the series, while Bohm led the U-M weekend attack with eight hits in the four-game sweep.
The Wolverines have added a non-conference game with Bowling Green for Tuesday afternoon (May 17, 3 p.m.) with senior RHP Phil Tognetti (Newhall, Calif./William S. Hart HS) listed as the starter. Tognetti is 1-0 with a 7.94 ERA.

In Big Ten baseball action on Sunday Michigan swept two games from Indiana for a four-game sweep, while Minnesota swept two games on Sunday 6-2 and 11-5 to take three of four from the first place Illini. In the three single games Purdue beat Iowa 10-3, Ohio State blanked Northwestern 1-0 and Penn State nipped Michigan State 3-2.

With saves in both games of Sunday's (May 15) doubleheader vs. Indiana, LHP Clayton Richard, who leads the team with 17 appearances, became the first Wolverine with two saves in a twinbill since Tyler Steketee had a pair vs. Northwestern at Fisher Stadium on Apr. 12, 1997.
Junior 2B Chris Getz with 24 stolen bases has the fifth-best single-season total in U-M history, one shy of Mike Watters (25, 1985) in fourth. Getz has 39 steals in two seasons as a Wolverine and is tied for eighth on the U-M career list with Chris Sabo (39, 1981-83).
