Last Year at the Mary Fossum: Broderick Leads U-M to Second Straight Team Title
Leading from start to finish, Brianna Broderick won her first collegiate medalist honors by seven strokes and paced the Wolverines to their second straight tournament title at the 2004 Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 18-19) at the Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich. Fall Season Bring Key Opportunities
With the beginning of the fall season upon the Wolverines, the Maize and Blue will have plenty of opportunities to face several district opponents. After starting off the season in East Lansing, Mich., at the Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 17-18), the Wolverines head to Bloomington, Ind., and the IU Golf Course for the Lady Northern Invitational (Sept. 24-25), which will be an early preview of the 2006 Big Ten Championships tournament site. Following the Big Ten preview, U-M will host the Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 1-2) at the U-M Golf Course. As mid-October hits the calendar, the Maize and Blue head down to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Lady Razorback Invitational (Oct. 16-18) which will give them a chance to face several district opponents. The fall season closes out with a trip to Wilmington, N.C., and the Landfall Tradition (Oct. 28-30) at the prestigious Country Club of Landfall's Jack Nicklaus course.
Looking for the Fifth in Sixth
After being selected for an NCAA Regional four of the last five years, the Wolverines will be looking to make it five out of the last six with the start of the 2005-06 season. The Wolverines may have lost Laura Olin to graduation, but the Maize and Blue return four of five starters from a year ago and two All-Big Ten golfers in Brianna Broderick (first team) and Ali Stinson (second team).
Low Numbers Are Always Welcomed Back
With the start of the 2005-06 season, the Wolverines return four of their top five scorer's from a year ago, including U-M's single season scoring record holder Brianna Broderick, who set the mark with a 75.50 per round average. In addition to Broderick, Ali Stinson (77.08), Amy Schmucker (77.42) and Isabelle Gendreau (77.54) all return to the Wolverine lineup. Those four also helped Michigan set the all-time team scoring average mark with a 302.94 per round score last season.
Longevity Key to Success and Depth
By playing in the 2005 NCAA Central Regional, Amy Schmucker has played in 36 straight tournaments for the Maize and Blue, while Brianna Broderick and Ali Stinson have played in 24 straight tournaments for the Maize and Blue. Isabelle Gendreau has added her name to the listing as she has played the last nine tournaments for the Wolverines. Last season, former Wolverine Laura Olin set the U-M record playing in 50 consecutive tournaments.
Successes Becoming the Tradition
Since the start of the 2000 spring season, the Wolverines women's golf program has won or finish as the runner-up in 24 of 68 total events. In that span they have also been selected to four NCAA regional appearances and advanced to the 2002 NCAA Championships. In 2005, the Wolverines also recorded the program's highest finish at the Big Ten Championship with a second place showing.
Broderick Among Golf World's Top 50 Players to Watch
Brianna Broderick has been selected as one of Golf World's Top 50 Female Players to Watch in the Annual College Preview Report in the Sept. 9 issue. Broderick is one of just two Big Ten Conference players recognized for Golf World listing as Purdue's Myrte Eikenaar also made the listing.
Former All-American Stacy Joins Coaching Staff
Cheryl Stacy has joined the U-M coaching staff after former assistant coach Sandy Wagner left to take over as head coach of Eastern Michigan. While at Ohio State, Stacy guided the Buckeyes to three straight Big Ten Conference crowns (1983-84-85) and was a back-to-back medalist at the conference tournament (1984-85), where she earned All-Big Ten honors in both years. Stacy won eight college tournaments, and in the NCAA competition she helped lead Ohio State to a 14th-place finish in 1983, 12th place in 1984 and a 13th-place showing in 1985. She earned All-America second team honors in 1984, and then was the first Ohio State women's golfer to earn All-America first team honors in 1985. She is one of four players to earn the national distinction at Ohio State.
