KENT, Ohio -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team rallied from an early two-goal deficit to defeat Kent State 4-3 on Sunday (Sept. 25) at the KSU Field Hockey Complex. Putting the Wolverines back into the win column, junior goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) earned her 36th career win to claim sole possession of Michigan's all-time wins record.
Junior Jill Civic (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus HS) tallied the game-winning goal -- her second of the season -- with just 11 minutes remaining in regulation. The tally came off a U-M penalty corner as senior/junior captain Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) made the stop and dished it off to junior Kara Lentz (Manchester, Mass./St. Paul's School), who fired a hard shot on the Golden Flash cage. Civic, positioned at the left post, got her stick on it and tipped the ball into the top corner.
Civic's goal broke a 3-3 tie that stood for 25 minutes past the halftime break following a high-scoring first frame. Kent State tallied the first two goals of the contest to build an early 2-0 advantage through the opening 13 minutes. Liz Fettrow and Berber Rischen scored at 8:05 and 13:05, respectively, with both assists going to Britt Van Pelt.
The Wolverines stormed back to steal the lead with three goals in just over three minutes' time. Freshman Erin Dallas (Marlow, N.H./Keene HS) earned her third goal of the season to put U-M on the scoreboard at the 22:39 mark after accepting a pass from junior/sophomore Eleanor Martin (Anchorage, Ky./Louisville Collegiate School). After being shut out against Ohio State (Sept. 23), Morris capitalized on a flurry around the Golden Flash cage to bat in a rebound and kick off a new scoring streak.
Sophomore Lucia Belassi (Paysandu, Uruguay/Liceo #1) gave the Maize and Blue its first lead of the contest at the 34:54 mark, tipping a shot from junior/sophomore Kristen Tiner (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) off a U-M penalty corner. The advantage, however, was short-lived as Kent State's Elizabeth Lahey sent a shot past Riley just six seconds before the halftime buzzer to knot the score at three goals apiece.
The Wolverines held narrow advantages in both major statistical categories, leading shots 17-15 and holding a 7-6 edge in penalty corners. Riley made four saves in her monumental win, while Kent State's Kara Copeland earned five stops in the losing effort.
The Wolverines will return home for a pair of conference matches next Friday and Sunday, Sept. 30-Oct. 2, hosting Indiana and Penn State at Ocker Field. Michigan will entertain the Hoosiers at 4 p.m. Friday before closing out the weekend with a 1 p.m. contest against the Nittany Lions on Sunday.
