ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Five players from the University of Michigan women's soccer team were honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for excellence in academics and athletics. Senior/junior Lindsey Cottrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) garnered CoSIDA Academic All-District IV first team honors, and junior Katie Bohard (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) received a spot on the All-District IV second team. The trio of junior Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) and seniors Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) and Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) earned All-District IV third team laurels.
To be nominated for the Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve on her team with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. Cottrell is enrolled in the Division of Kinesiology, while Artsis, Coffman and Tuura are enrolled in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts, and Bohard in the College of Engineering.
As a first-team selection, Cottrell is now eligible for Academic All-America honors. The national team is scheduled to be announced Tuesday, Nov. 21. The captain defender has started all 20 games this season on the back line, aiding the Michigan defense to a team goals-against average of 0.84 that ranks third in the Big Ten. Cottrell was also recently announced as a member of the All-Big Ten second team and the representative for Michigan for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
Bohard has had a breakout season after playing in four games as a freshman and once as a sophomore. She has tallied two scores, including the first of her career on her birthday that stood as the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Loyola Marymount (Sept. 15).
Artsis' season has been limited due to injury. She has started 55 of 56 games in her career, posting four goals and four assists. This season, she started the first 13 games before going down to an injury. She had posted 12 shots in 13 games.
Coffman and Tuura each joined Cottrell on the All-Big Ten second team. Coffman is building on a breakout season as junior when she scored six times and added two helpers. The captain forward's five goals this season lead the team and she ranks second with 13 points.
Tuura is the Big Ten leader in goals-against average (0.54), which is the lowest by any Wolverine goalkeeper in a season in program history. She also posted six shutouts and 53 saves in 17 regular-season games. Also limited due to injury, Tuura still earned an 8-3-4 record and became the program's all-time minutes played leader earlier this season. She backstopped the Maize and Blue to a 2-1 victory over Indiana in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament Thursday night (Nov. 2), making four saves in the wind and cold.
Cottrell is the lone player recognized that has garnered a CoSIDA Academic All-District IV award previously in her career as she was selected for the District IV second team in 2005.
Michigan hopes to keep its Big Ten title aspirations alive as it takes on top-seeded Penn State this evening in second-round action. The match has a start time of 7:30 at Jeffrey Field in State College, Pa.
