PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's water polo team suffered its first two losses of the season Saturday (Feb. 11) at the Stanford Invitational, being held at the Avery Aquatics Center. No. 3-ranked Stanford handed U-M its first loss of the season in the first game of the day by a score of 12-4. Michigan then fell to No. 11-ranked San Jose State 7-6 in the afternoon game. Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's) and Mary Chatigny (Palm Springs, Calif./Palm Springs) highlighted the offense in the two games with three goals apiece.
In the first game of the day, Michigan jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming West Valley) fed Hausmann for the goal. Stanford subsequently scored nine straight before Hausmann scored again from the four-meter to make it 9-2. Stanford scored six in the final 5:01 of the first period to go up 6-1 and netted three straight goals to start the second period.
After the Cardinal went up 11-2 to end the third period, Michelle Keeley (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) tallied Michigan's third goal a minute into the fourth quarter and Chatigny followed with a goal on a counterattack to make it 11-4 with just over two minutes left in the game. Stanford added another in the final minute of the game for the final margin.
In the afternoon contest with the Spartans, Michigan's bad luck continued as the Wolverines hit numerous posts on aggressive shots in the offensive zone. Neither team scored in the first frame, but San Jose State got on the board quickly into the second on the first of four goals in the contest by sophomore Sarah Hovland. The Spartans scored again with three minutes remaining in the first half and U-M found itself down 2-0 heading into halftime.
Sharayah Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) scored the first goal for the Wolverines, capitalizing off a counterattack 34 seconds into the third period. The Spartans answered with a goal 26 seconds later to make it 3-1, but Welch cut the lead to 3-2 with a 6-on-5 tally. After Hovland scored again, Michigan tied it up 4-4 with two consecutive goals from Welch and Hausmann in a span of 1:17.
SJSU netted two goals in the first three minutes of the final frame to push the lead to 6-4. Chatigny began the comeback with a goal with 2:34 left on the power play, but Hovland netted her fourth with just over a minute left. Chatigny netted another with 37 seconds to play, but the Wolverines were whistled with an ejection and the Spartans ran out the remainder of the clock to seal the win.
Michigan faces No. 2 Southern California tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. PST. U-M will play in the fifth-place game at 2:10 p.m. with a win or the seventh-place game at 1 p.m. with a loss.
