Big Sixth Inning Carries Eastern Michigan Past Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Eastern Michigan used an eight-run sixth inning to beat the University of Michigan 9-3 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday night (April 19) in Oestrike Stadium.
The Wolverines (20-13) held a 3-0 lead after five innings with fifth-year senior LHP Drew Taylor (Toronto, Ontario/Upper Canada College) working on a three-hit shutout with four strikeouts, but the first six Eagles in the sixth reached and scored, with SS Jeff Hehr hitting a two-run homer to tie the game and catcher Derek Lehrman adding a three-run homer to highlight the rally for EMU (18-16).
The Wolverines had taken a 2-0 lead in the third inning on three walks and a two-run single by fifth-year senior DH Jeff Kunkel (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest). Michigan added another run in the fourth inning on a two-out fielding error as sophomore RF Doug Pickens (West Bloomfield, Mich./Brother Rice), who singled with two outs, scored the run.
Freshman LF Adam Abraham (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./South HS) had two of Michigan's five hits vs. EMU.
The Wolverines start a four-game Big Ten series at Purdue on Friday (April 21, 4 p.m.) at Lambert Field with freshman RHP Zach Putnam (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) at 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA listed as the starter.
